What should we look for at next week’s Citrix Synergy Conference?

Citrix’s Synergy conference is taking place next week at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. (Synergy is the new name for the combined iForum, Summit, Virtualization Congress, Network World Live, and Geek Speak conferences.) Gabe and I will both be there all week with our cameras recording demos and conversations for Brian Madden TV.

There are only about 50 exhibitors this year, and several of them are not related to desktop virtualization, so it should be no problem for Gabe and I to get demos from everyone on our list. I know for sure that I want to record a demo of Neocleus’ client hypervisor, as well as learning more about Citrix’s Project Independence. We’ll also be looking for demos of Citrix’s Flash acceleration for ICA.

Our questions to you are simple: What should we look for? What demos do you want us to record? What questions should we ask of Citrix and the other vendors there? (Here’s a list of vendors who will be there.)

It would be great if you get a video of RingCube and give us you opinion on their solution and how it fits in the desktop or other spaces.

From a mangement point of view, I'd like to know what you think of DynamicOps vs' ToutVirtual and they apply or don't apply to what we do.

Have fun!

Well, apart from a big bag of freebies, I think you should be looking for systems management tools, including software and OS license management for a dynamic infrastructure, user experience management, and end to end performance reporting. Citrix have some of this stuff already but I feel it doesn't get enough focus. These things are important from the perspective of providing a reliable and performant service and they often get lost in all the marketing hype around the more "glamorous" aspects of VDI. In other words, I think you should look under the hood and see how the plumbing works (if that's not a mixed metaphor).

I'd like to know more about WhipTail Technologies, they are making some bold claims about IO performance and how they can get better user density on both XenDesktop as well as XenApp when used as underlying storage.

In addition, it would be good to hear more about what AppSense can do for VDI.

You need to make it a point to seek out and check out the dragster fast storage solutions from Whiptail Technologies, http://www.whiptailtech.com. I have personally seen this amazingly fast and solution for running shared storage for virtualization, VDI or any other process in need of flame throwing storage speeds.

Many of our tests left the hardware waiting for the appilcation(s) to catch up to the speed of the storage.
