Five consumerization sessions to look forward to at VMworld 2012

VMworld 2012 is still a month and a half away, but it's never too early to start thinking about which sessions to attend.

VMworld 2012 is still a month and a half away, but it’s never too early to start thinking about which sessions to attend. There’s a decent amount of content on consumerization-related topics, and here are five that stood out as I perused the newly released session catalog:

Directions in End-User Computing: The Post-PC Era

Managing to work two catchphrases (“end-user computing” and “post-PC era”) into one session title? Well played, VMware. In this session, EUC1351, VMware CTO Scott Davis will offer a look at VMware’s various technologies for addressing consumerization, from View for desktop virtualization to Horizon for application management. But the kicker is the promise of “sneak peeks and demos of technologies percolating in VMware’s labs.”

How Consumerization and Mobility are Impacting File Sharing and Collaboration Strategies

This session, EUC1758, sticks out because it’s one of the few where a VMware employee won’t be speaking. Terri McClure, a senior analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, will provide an overview of the various consumer- and business-focused cloud storage and file-sharing services on the market and how to choose the right one for your organization.

VMware Horizon: Upcoming Attractions and Roadmap

Horizon Application Manager has been on the market for a year, but the other pieces of VMware’s suite are still -- wait for it -- on the Horizon. (Thank you! I’ll be here all week! Make sure to tip your waitress!) Details may emerge during this session, EUC1526, where attendees will hear how Horizon will integrate with VMware View, Octopus and AppBlast.

VMware Horizon Mobile: Mobility Management Within the Enterprise

VMworld takes place almost four years after VMware first announced its plans for smartphone virtualization, and a product still hasn’t come to market. And other than the basics -- hypervisor on the phone, separate personal and business environments, Android-only -- we don’t know a ton about Horizon Mobile and the Mobile Virtualization Platform. Maybe that will change after session EUC1822.

Executives Leading the Enterprise Social Revolution

Mobility and cloud computing are obviously the two main branches of consumerization, but don’t forget about social collaboration. As Facebook and Twitter change users’ expectations around communication, IT may have to respond. In this session, EUC2592, users of VMware’s Socialcast platform will explain how they implemented social collaboration and got their users on board.

I'm not sure if I'm going yet, but VMworld 2012 looks sweet!
