BriForum 2013 Call for Papers is now open for both London and Chicago!

I'm happy to announce that the Call for Papers process for BriForum 2013 is now open. This year we're combining the submission process for both shows into one, which we hope will do a few things.

I'm happy to announce that the Call for Papers process for BriForum 2013 is now open. This year we're combining the submission process for both shows into one, which we hope will do a few things. First, it will help us get an idea of what content can go to each show, so rather than doubling up on things we can better spread things around. As the space BriForum covers broadens from 100% Desktop Virtualization to a mix between that and mobility (which we've grown to call End User Computing), this will help us sort out the sessions in a more organized way. Plus with BriForum, the attendees get access to all the videos from both shows, so the more unique sessions we can have, the better.

The second thing it will do is allow us to get the list of sessions posted online much earlier than in the past. This has been one of the bigger complaints from potential attendees, and this is our attempt at addressing that. In past years we've waited as long as possible to finalize the session lists, which comes at the expense of not having that information available earlier. This year we hope to blend the best of both worlds into the Call for Papers process.

With that said, the CFP survey will be online through February 22nd, at which time we'll start the task of choosing sessions. Kevin Goodman happened to be in our offices last year and wrote a great article giving his perspective on the session selection process from an outsider's point of view. This process is pretty involved, and we'll spend the next several days devoted to putting the agenda together. Submitters will be notified of their session's status on March 5, at which point we will also announce the sessions for both shows.

During the submission process, you'll have the opportunity to submit your session for one or both shows. This year, BriForum London will be May 16-17 at , and BriForum Chicago will be from July 30-August 1. 

BriForum London will be held at the etc venues St. Paul's Conference Center at 200 Aldersgate Street, adjacent to the Museum of London. Through February 15, you can register for the Super Early Bird price of £695, after which the price will go up to £795. The regular rate will be £895, which takes effect on April 6.

BriForum Chicago returns to the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Until April 26 you can register at the Super Early Bird discounted price of USD $1295, after which the price will go up to USD $1495. The regular rate of USD $1595 will take effect on June 15.

Of course, if we accept your session, we'll pay for your travel, accommodations, and conference admission!

Now, on to the particulars:

If I had one piece of advice to give to potential speakers it would be to make a kick-ass abstract. Our process looks at abstracts and titles only for the first pass. We don't look at speaker names or anything else. Keep it concise, but if it has to be long to make your point, so be it. Because of this "blind" approach, we end up with between 10% and 20% new speakers each year, which we love! Almost all of the new speakers are prior attendees, so they are already aware of the technical nature (not the mention the culture) of BriForum.

The general experience for speakers is the same as years past. So if your session is accepted:

  • We'll pay for your travel to/from the event
  • We'll pay for your hotel while you're there
  • We'll pay for your conference admission
  • You'll be able to attend a speakers-only dinner before the show where you can get to know fellow speakers

If your session has multiple presenters, we can only pay for the primary speaker (the person who fills out the form). We can sometimes work out a deal, though, to get you both there. (For example, both speakers get admission to the conference, but they have to share a hotel room and pay their own travel.) If you have any questions, please email Lindsay Jeanloz (

From a technical standpoint, here's what you need to know:

  • No more 1024x768 - go with whatever resolutions fits on the projector. Keep it realistic, though, since we don't really know what the projectors will be.
  • We will record your session. While you will own the content as your intellectual property, part of the submission process is you giving us permission to publish the video, etc…
  • There is no video capture box anymore, so no need to worry about all that extra stuff.
  • You do, however, have to have the appropriate adapters to connect your laptop to the projector. We also have a few spare laptops in case you need them.
  • All sessions are 75 minutes long.

There are a few important notes about submissions before you get started:

  • If you want to submit multiple sessions, that's great! Just make sure you submit them separately, otherwise they'll get lost in the mix.
  • The session must be submitted by the presenter. If you're not in the weeds enough to submit your own session, we probably don't want your session. Anything not submitted by the listed presenter will be ignored (that means, you, PR firms that email us all the time about submitting BriForum sessions). The unofficial first pass on sessions gets rid of these so we don't waste our time evaluating them only to find out that they violated this rule.
  • If for some reason the survey site is down, PLEASE try again later rather than emailing me. If you still have problems, you can get in touch with me at If it's not in the survey results when we export the data, it's very easy for the session to get lost.
  • You're welcome to submit sessions on whatever you want, but of course we're looking for the content that has the most broad appeal. That doesn't mean high-level sessions, though. We want deep, nitty-gritty sessions on topics that people use all the time. XenApp/XenDesktop, application virtualization, VMware View, mobile device/application/data management, and consumerization for instance. We have deep dives into protocols and cloud services, device management and ultra-specific aspects of Windows like file system filters. All these things affect everybody, and the depth that the speakers cover them is the essence of BriForum.
  • If you work for a vendor, you can still submit a session. However, you cannot submit a session about your company's product. As an example, David Stafford, who works for VMware, did a session last year about how he has seen users circumventing IT policies (we call that FUIT). That was fine. We would not have accepted a session from him talking about the advantages of VMware View, however. This has been an issue in the past, so if you're unsure about this policy, please read this.

If you made it this far down, thank you for paying attention. You get +100 bonus points towards session acceptance (too bad we don't use points, though. It's kind of like Who's Line is it Anyway? :)
