As we gear up for MMS (by "we" I mean Jack), we're trying to focus on certain areas of the show, since a lot of it doesn't necessarily apply to desktop virtualization or consumerization. There is a lot going on, and based on the number of emails I've...

I had a chance to have a chat with Calgary-based desktopsites (DTS) earlier this week. DTS makes a desktop virtualization product called Konect Elite, which came across my inbox described as being "like small business version of Quest vWorkspace." I have...

The agenda for the show was wide-open. We also arranged for Quest Software's Rob Mallicoat to call in to talk a bit about what they've been up to, including them reorganizing the desktop division of the company and buying ChangeBASE. Here's what we ended...

While Brian (and maybe you) might disagree, I believe that BrianMadden.com should be more about the "enterprise desktop" and end user client computing in general. The current focus on server-based computing and desktop virtualization is too limiting....

I have been looking for a decent solution handling apps that require Internet Explorer 6, and maybe we have a good one now from Browsium . One problem faced by many enterprises in moving to Windows 7 from Windows XP is that they have applications that...

Tim Mangan was at Softricity ten years ago, when application virtualization was in its infancy. In this article he looks back at the history and what's happening now. On February 26th this year, Softricity, the creators of what is now called App-V , turns...

I have another free tool for people that work with App-V. One of the challenges of working with App-V is dealing with situations when things don't work right, especially when using the full infrastructure model. Since you have a multi-part delivery...

There's a lot of talk about "enterprise app stores." I'm not sure what the exact definition of an enterprise app store is, but the analogy most used is something like "imagine Apple's iPhone App Store, except for corporate IT...

This is an updated post. Microsoft happened to make additional announcements today, after I posted! There is a variety of news regarding App-V to share. None of it might be earth-shattering individually, but collectively it adds up. 1. App-V 4.5 SP2 Upgrade...

Organizations who move towards Microsoft Application Virtualization often wonder what the best delivery infrastructure is for their environment. In the days of SoftGrid there was only one way of delivering your virtual applications to the end-user: you...

When you deploy App-V applications on laptops and pc's, expect a lot of helpdesk calls. While App-V is a mature application virtualization solution, it is interesting to see that a simple design decision does actually not make a lot of sense…...

Last up in our rundown of the Big 5's desktop virtualization product lines is Microsoft. This is probably the most ambiguous vendor, because so many of their products intertwine to make up their solution. Many of those products have been around for...

See this blog post from Microsoft about the changes in TS CAL licensing. In particular, they will now include the App-V for TS into the new Windows Server 2008 R2 RDS CAL! This doesn't get you an App-V for windows desktop CAL, which you would need...

Yesterday, Microsoft made the beta version of App-V 4.6 available for download. The big feature about 4.6 is the support for 64-bit client machines. We have been working with earlier versions that Microsoft made available as part of the private TAP program...

There are a lot of people out there who think Citrix was a fool to spend $500m on XenSource . A few people think it was brilliant though. (Doug Brown had a good piece on the brilliance although I can't find it now.) I agree with Doug. Citrix paid...
