Whether you're talking about classic Terminal Server, server-based computing, Microsoft Remote Desktop, or VDI, all of these technologies require some kind of remote display protocol (or "remoting protocol") to connect the remote desktop to the local client. There are actually quite a few options today, including Microsoft RDP (with or without RemoteFX), Citrix HDX (formerly called "Citrix ICA,"), Teradici PC-over-IP (which is also what VMware uses for VMware View)., Sun ALP, VNC... the list goes on! There are also several products that enhance the base-level RDP protocol from Microsoft, like Ericom Blaze, Wyse TCX, and Quest EOP. Here's a look at everything we've written about remote display protocols over the years.

Last November I wrote an article about NVIDIA's "Monterey" project where they were researching how they could use GPUs to enhance the VDI remoting experience. They talked about multiple goals, including (1) using GPUs to do super fast, high quality, hardware...

I've been trying to get together with OnLive for well over a year now, ever since seeing their cloud-based gaming platform. I'm not much of a gamer, though. For me it was the protocol that they use that generated the most interest. For a while my requests...

We've all heard of the Apple TV. Some love it, some hate it, and the reasons for that are pretty well documented . The thing is, most of those opinions all pertain to its ability as a home theater device and not much else. Still, it's hard to look at...

We've been writing about RemoteFX for over a year now, although most of the focus has been using it to connect to Windows 7 VMs running on Hyper-V for VDI scenarios. But did you know that you can also use RemoteFX to connect to Remote Desktop Session...

We've discussed Teradici and their PC-over-IP protocol quite a bit over the years on BrianMadden.com. Back in 2009, I shared a video of my first impressions, and later Teradici was heavily involved in the VMware View portion of our Geek Week: VDI event...
