Desktone is a software company whose products are used to power massive "Desktops in the cloud" service offerings. They invented the term "Desktop as a Service" (DaaS). In some ways they compete against Citrix and VMware in large installations, although more often than not they partner with them. Citrix owns a minority stake. When they were originally founded, they focused on selling their software to huge providers (IBM, HP, Verizon, etc.) who would then in-turn build their own desktop cloud offerings. In late 2010, Desktone announced that they would also build their own cloud and sell direct to customers, with Windows 7 desktops starting at $1 per day.

It appears that Desktone is reinventing themselves again, or at least going back to their roots. Just about a year ago, Brian wrote an article about how they'd re-tooled and are now going to sell DaaS solutions direct to businesses instead of trying to...

We've discussed third-party hosted cloud-based desktops-as-a-service quite a bit in the past. My general consensus has been that while they make sense in certain cases, the logistical and technical limitations mean that third-party hosted desktops will...

"Circling the drain" is the phrase I recently used to describe Desktone to a friend. The company's been around for awhile with a vision of cloud-based hosted VDI desktops. They made a lot of noise a few years ago but I hadn't heard much of anything about...

I know this is a topic that we’ve discussed here and there, but today I’d like to tackle the issue head-on. Simply put, do you think that desktops delivered from the cloud will be real anytime soon? I guess its possible that we could get desktops streamed...

Earlier this week, IBM announced its first wave of commercial cloud services . The news was a big step for them and was well covered by bloggers and via twitter, although I didn’t personally pay too much attention since I don’t really follow...

Amazon entered the cloud computing market a few years ago with a set of pay-for-what-you-use offerings called Amazon Web Services, or AWS. Last week when Amazon announced that they'd soon release a version of EC2 running Windows. So if there's an EC2 running Windows, I wonder whether it could be used for a "VDI in the cloud" scenario? Would it be possible to give each of your users a Windows EC2 instance, where you'd only pay for the actual time the thing was up and running?

As I wrote last week, VMworld was a ridiculously huge conference. Although I was overwhelmed at first, once I realized that most of the vendors didn't have anything to do with the application or desktop space, it was easier to handle. In fact, in many ways I felt that I was at a 3000-person, 30-vendor VDI conference that just happened to be taking place at the same time as a gigantic 14000-person, 200-vendor virtualization conference....

Desktone, the desktop-as-a-service (DaaS?) company, has just signed on both HP and Verizon to provide desktops-as-a-service to their customers. Right now Alessandro says they're only based on VMware's VI3 infrastructure, which is insteresting since Citrix was one of the investors who threw $17M into the company last summer....
