Citrix XenApp stories on BrianMadden.com

Citrix XenApp is the product that really started this whole "desktop virtualization thing" back in the 1990s. (Well, back then it was called Citrix MetaFrame, then MetaFrame Presentation Server, then just Presentation Server, and finally XenApp.) Citrix XenApp is still Citrix's main product. It's used to extend Microsoft Remote Desktop Session Host / Terminal Server environments via server-based computing to users inside and outside of the firewall. I actually wrote two books about Citrix XenApp (well, MetaFrame) in the early 2000s. They're still available online if you want to read them. You can also read the definition of Citrix XenApp at SearchVirtualDesktop.com.

  • Citrix plans to end support for XenApp 6.0 in 2013. What's that? You're still migrating to 6.0?

A few months ago Andrew Wood wrote a nice blog article about the end of life of a number of key XenApp-related products, and it reminded me of some conversions I've been having with a number of my customers about this topic. Like all big vendors, Citrix...

  • What exactly is an "enterprise app store?" (No seriously... what is it?)

There's a lot of talk about "enterprise app stores." I'm not sure what the exact definition of an enterprise app store is, but the analogy most used is something like "imagine Apple's iPhone App Store, except for corporate IT...

  • Tool for Publishing App-V on XenApp Farms

If you use both App-V and XenApp together, once you have deployed App-V virtual applications to your XenApp 4.5 and 5.0 Farm, you will want to publish the shortcuts to users. This can be a slow and tedious process for App-V virtual applications when using...

  • Now that XenApp can power on/off VMs, who needs XenDesktop?

Citrix's XenApp and XenDesktop products have always had an artificial and somewhat arbitrary separation of features. The more expensive XenApp delivers desktops from terminal server and apps from terminal server, VDI, and streaming servers, while...

  • Citrix XenApp's new feature pack is really just a licensing change. How significant is this?

Yesterday Citrix announced a Feature Pack for XenApp 5 . (Interestingly they're just calling it "XenApp 5 Feature Pack," not "Feature Pack 1" or anything.) From what I can tell, there are not any new features per se, but rather...
