I am in the process of setting up a new PS 4.5 farm (2 servers) with new hardware. Once the farm is operational, I will begin migrating users to the new farm. Once all users are on the new farm I will shut down the old farm. No one will ever access both farms at the same time.

I did the following:

Downloaded the PS 4.5 w/FP1 software from My Citrix

Downloaded the current license file from My Citrix

Uninstalled the current 4.0 license server

Installed the 4.5 license server

Installed the new license file (the server name remained the same)

The license server continues (after a hiccup or two) to issue licenses for the old farm. However, when I try to instal 4.5 onto the new hardware and point to the liecnse server, it tells me that I don't have the corect level of licenses. I understand, after research, that the 4.5 w/FP1 licenses are an upgrade.

My question is what I need to do to have both farms functioning while migrating. If I upgrade & download the license file, the two options I can think of are:

Download/install the new license file into the current license server. Both farms can point to and use the licenses.

Set up a new license server and install teh new license file. Each farm gets its licenses from a different server.

What are my options? I suspect that #2 is not exactly legal. Can option #1 work? Or will I lose the ability to issue licesnes for my 4.0 Farm?

TIA,

After investigation I have discovered that there are different versions of Citrix PS4 on our servers.
One server has Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server for Windows 4.0.5
and the other has Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server for Windows 4.0.6
Does anyone know how I upgrade version 4.0.5 to 4.0.6?
This computer running Citrix Presentation Server will now stop accepting connections. This server is no longer in or could not enter a licensing grace period.

I have been working with Citrix support, but with limited success. It seems that I can correct the issue for a couple days if I change the license server that it's talking to, then back. This recreates the MPS-WSXICA_MPS-WSXICA.INI file and forces the server to communicate with the license server.

The servers are all on Presentation server 4.5 Roll-up 2 with Hotfix PSE450R02W2K3036. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
We were wondering if it is ok to host a Citrix License Server (at our primary site) on a Web Interface Server or does it have to be a dedicated server by itself. Also, how about at a DR site?
(VECD, for those of you who don't remember, stands for "Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktop." It's the special license you need if you want to run multiple instances of Vista on your workstation via a local VMM or local hypervisor, or if you want to conenct to a remote instance of Vista via server-based computing in a VDI scenario.) The big downside to VECD is that it's an "add-on" license. So first you have to buy a Vista license (A Vista "Enterprise" license, to be exact.) Then you have to pay for Software Assurance. And only then to you qualify for the right to buy the VECD add-on license to let you run Vista remotely.

When I talk to people about VECD, a lot of them are honestly surprised to hear about it. "You mean I'm not allowed to remotely connect to Vista without it?" Nope. They didn't even know!

The big stink is that most of the world ("most" being defined as "everyone who doesn't work for Microsoft") wants Microsoft to just say, "Ok, you pay for one Vista license for each employee, and then however you figure is the best way to provide access to Vista is fine with us. Remote, local, one instance for each app--do whatever you need to do."

Yeah right. Keep dreaming.

I was fortunate enough to be interviewed for Eric's article. On the phone he asked me why Microsoft wasn't getting more progressive here. My answer? Because they don't need to. They're a monopoly. The reality is that in today's world, you can't get away from Windows applications. And for the foreseable future, Windows applications will require Windows. And since only one company makes Windows, well, you know the rest...

Getting back to the specifics of last week's VECD announcement, Microsoft did offer some alternative VECD pricing, specifically offering a lower-priced version for contractors who come into an environment and for people who will connect occasionally from home. But VECD, as it is now, isn't going anyway until Microsoft feels enough market pressure to make a change. Remember, monopolies only innovate when they have to.
Trying this again.

I have recently completed my migration from MF XP on W2K to PS 4.5 on W2K3. Completely decommisioned old farm and servers(6) and 2K TS License server.
I use WYSE S10's and 1125's to connect to my farm published desktop and apps.

I have plenty of TS cals for my user base but have currently run out of TS licenses. When I look at my TS License I noticed that I have a bunch of licenses issued (about 60) to my old 2K TS/Citrix boxes. I had 6 servers in my old farm, so each one is issued multiple licenses.
These license have expiration dates starting end of this month and running through Oct. I know they will return to the available pool when they expire, but the bulk of them are a couple of weeks away.

I would like to try to reclaim these now. MS clearing house wont reissue me licenses, told me to reinstall TS licensing.

If I deactivate, uninstall, reinstall and reactivate what affect will that have on my currently issued TS lic to my WYSE units? Will those still be good until they expire and then they will just be reissued a new one from the new install? Or will they throw errors at me right away?
I have a couple of S10's that will not connect and aren't issued a temp lic.

Any help suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Bizarre one this. We have got some alerts in our Licence Managemnt Console reporting that we need to apply our Subscription Advantage Licences as they have expired. I have downloaded all of the required licence files but when I apply them our licence count goes down!

The licence count has gone down from 858 to 710! What has caused this to happen? Am I applying duplicate licences that is causing this to occur? How do I know which ones have already been applied?

In the MyCitrix pages, should the Subscription Advantage Licences all have the same licence code??

Hope someone can help as we need to get this sorted out.

Luckly the licence server is a virtual server so I was easily able to roll back to a state prior to the licence additions.

I have taken a copy of the virtual machine and started it up off of the network.

Thanks,

long post so I apologize in advance

Setup:

5 - PS (xen) 4.5 servers 1 farm on W2K3 SP1 - not virtualized
TS License Server W2K3 SP1 DC - Licensing mode - Per Device (24x7 shop) in Domain mode
All PS servers point to TS License server

Noticed I have old Metaframe XP W2K servers (6 servers total, using 60 licenses) on my 2K3 TS license server.
I have completely taken down my old farm, old servers are no longer on domain. Last server was removed 2 weeks ago.
These TS cals are marked to expire over the next 2 months, which if I understand the licensing correctly should be put back into my available pool when they expire, giving me 60 TS Cals back. If that happens great I have no problem then other then currently being out of licenses and not being able to add anyone new.
I called MS Clearing house to see if they would issue me a 60 TS Cal liscense key, but they said no. I would need to completely deactivate and uninstall the TS licensing and reinstall and then reactivate to clear out those licenses. I get that and if that is what I have to do ok.

My question is if I do that what does that do to my existing clients that already have a valid license issued?
All my internal clients connect to published desktop via WYSE 1125 or S10's.
I do have WI (v 3.0, CSG 2.0) setup and have people hitting the published apps from home or where ever also.

Is this something I should do during a maintenance window? Will the WYSE units balk on connection after TS License resetup because they already have TS license issued? No way to remove TS cal like on a pc for these units.

Is there a different way to get rid of these old servers using up cals other than reinstalling TS licensing?

Thanks for any suggestions, responses,

Bruce
