Does Microsoft support adding Win2008 Terminal Servers to a Win2003 Domain? I have found some documentation on the web dealing with running adprep using the Windows 2008 Install files to update a 2003 schema but these documents all appear to be in preparation for updating the domain controllers to 2008. I would like to know if I can keep my domain at Win2003 and still be able to deploy Win2008 Terminal Servers with 2008 Group Policy and Preference enhancements. Works is currently in the process if upgrading their window 2000 domain to windows 2008 and have a Metaframe XPe farm. Does any know of any XPe authentication issues with 2008 Active Directory or any gotches that we should be watching out for.

I have a environment that contains Windows Server 2008 terminal servers and on top Res Powerfuse2008 SR2. Now I managed with the combination of gpo's and Res powerfuse settings to hide / disable most of the goodies users really don't need nor want. Accept with one item. If a user opens the windows explorer then you get that need option to browse your network. If you open this icon emediatly search active directory, add printer buttons apear. In other words a very unwanted situation. I have a ticked open at Res Powerfuse, they can create the same situation but are also unable to remove the network feature. All network policies are in place like no computers near me etc.

We are exploring the scenario of moving away from Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 to Terminal Server 2008. Our environment is rather basic and so our decision really comes down to the cost of licensing. In reading up on the Session Broker service, it seems that it is only recommended for farms of 10 servers or less. Our farm will be around 15 servers with a load of 22-25 per server. Does anyone have any experience with Session Broker in a farm of this size? Might I be better off going with a hardware solution? If I did that I suppose I should have two available for redundancy? Any recommendations?

Windows Server 2008 offers too many benefits for us not to migrate but if C: cannot be re-mapped we're a little stuck... :(

If I login using RDP Client 6.1 directly to the server with the same user credentials and run the same command that's configured in the RemoteApp publication, the site is properly identified as being in the Intranet zone and functions perfectly.

It almost appears that part of the GPO isn't being processed when launching the RemoteApp. However, the URL to Zone mapping is done in the Machine Configuration part of the GPO; so that doesn't make any sense.

Any thoughts on what might cause this or how to fix it?

I imported the SSL cert into the Local Machine's "Personal" certificate store. The MMC Certificates snap-in says it's valid.

When I configure the RemoteApp options, I can see and select the cert on the Digital Signature tab of the RemoteApp Deployment Settings.

However, when I press "OK", I get this multi-paragraph error dialog box that says the cert can't be used to sign RDP files:

"The configured digital certificate is not valid for RDP files, or the certificate is not installed on this computer." then it goes on to tell me to select something else or live with clients not trusting the RDP file.

Any suggestions anyone would have would be great.

We all know that SecurID works with Citrix Web Interface, but I work in a small shop where wWe don't use all of the features that Citrix offers and moving to TS2008 native makes more sense than paying for Citrix.

We use two-factor authentication for remote access over the Internet and would like to do the same with native TS 2008.

Any info on using TSWeb with RSA would be appreciated.

I have a Wyse V10L with the Wyse OS installed. When I try to remote into the TS servers using the farm name, there is a quick flash on the screen and nothing happens. I can remote fine into a Vista machine using the V10L, so here are the conclusion I have came to:

- It may be NLA related. When I remote into the Farm using the RDP client built into my Windows machine (Vista), I am forced to authenticate before seeing the Windows screen at all. I disabled NLA on the TS Servers and changed the option on the Windows RDP client and it still forces me to authenticate. I tried passing the creditals in the Wyse RDP client and that did not work either.

- It may be Session Broker/Farm related. I am not sure if the Wyse RDP client is able to handle remoting to a server and being redirected to another server in the farm (session brokering).

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm playing with a Server 2008 TS farm and I'm testing the load balancing features. I've done the following:

Setup a domain controller with DNS and WINS.
Setup 2 TS - no licensing configured
Setup a TS Gateway

Created a domain group for TS users and added it to the local Remote Desktop Users
Created a domain group for TS servers

Created a bunch of testusers and added them to the domain TS users group.

I created DNS entries for all servers, including the required addresses for load balancing (farm name with IP addresses from the terminal servers).

I added the terminal server domain group to the TS_RAP

There are no restrictions set in TS_RAP or TS_CAP

Basically the farm works and and different sessions with the testusers are neatly spread over the farm.

However, when I try to connect to a desktop (even with an admin account) to a specific server I get this message:

(Dialog name) Remote Desktop Connection
Unable to connect to terminal server
The terminal server farm server1.blabla.local that you are trying to connect to is redirecting you to server server2.blabla.local. Remote desktop cannot verify that this server belongs to the same server farm. This can occur if there is a server on your network with the same name as the server farm.

The server belongs to the same farm. When I open Terminal Services Manager and Import from TS Broker I see both servers. All the testuser terminal sessions are made to FARM01.blabla.local and both terminal servers are used. Also, there is no server with name FARM01.

In short I have no idea what could be wrong and if someone does (or has an idea) don't hold back for the sake of the greater good ;-)

I've got 4 servers in my test lab, all running longhorn beta 3:
DC1 - Domain Controller
SQL1 - DB Server
Web1 - Web Server
App1 - Term Server

Web1 has IIS and my TS Gateway installed.

When I point a Windows XP IE7 browser to (simplified address) http://web1/TS, I get the following message:


ActiveX control not installed

The Terminal Services ActiveX Client control is not available. You must install this ActiveX control before you can access RemoteApps through TS Web Access.

The ActiveX control is included with the Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 client update. You can learn about this update and download the installation package by visiting this website.

After you install the package, you must refresh this Web page to see the list of RemoteApps.


I also get the yellow pop-up bar at the top of IE asking if I want to install the said activeX script. I click to install, and the page refreshes. It still says the ActiveX control is not installed, same error message as above. Yellow pop-up bar comes up again... Pete fell in, who was left in the boat? :-)

I have hunted down the RDP 6.0 client and installed it on this XP client box, and run windows update just-in-case, but that didn't fix my problem either.

I have tested Windows 2008 beta 3 edition and enable TS from the server. I use TS to publish application via web and using rdp file. It look impressive.

If this going to take place, I think it gonna give a lot of impact to Citrix in term of product market and domain. It also somehow will impact VMWare as well.

I have a win2k3 server that has TS installed and activated along with 5 (what i thought to be device cals) also activated and installed. there are 5 clients who connect daily but for some reason they are only issued with 90 temp licenses. when i tried re-installing the licenses i noticed that the are listed as Per User and that they are indeed activated so it will not let me continue installing them.

What i would like to know is if i remove TS licensing and deactivate the license server then do a reinstall will this fix the problem.
