Good-bye Ardence. Hello Citrix Provisioning Server.

Last week Citrix officially changed the name of their Ardence Server product to Citrix Provisioning Server. It appears that the product itself hasn't changed at all.

Disk image management in VDI environments: VMware, Ardence, shared disks, and the offline goal

A few weeks ago I wrote about VMware's OnDemand streaming announcement and that it might challenge Citrix's Ardence solution. One potential advantage VMware might have over Ardence is that VMware's solution will work offline. Is offline important in the VDI space? If so, what technological hurdles have yet to be solved, or is everything in place today?

VMware OnDemand streaming technology will challenge Citrix’s Ardence platform

VMware just previewed a technology that lets a client VM player boot up a virtual machine from a virtual hard disk file located across a network. This is pretty much exactly what Citrix's Ardence platform does. Even though Ardence has been doing this for years, VMware may have the upper hand from a technology standpoint.
