I've been attempting to migrate my thin client environement from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 for a while now. However I need to use Group Policy Item Level Targeting to give different thin clients different user environments. Unfortunately Terminal Services Item Level Targeting is broken in both 2008 and 2008 R2 and no hotfix has been forthcomming since last summer.
Recently though a hotfix KB976033 was reported to be sort of available but it's not easy to get. Has anyone managed to get their hands on this hotfix? Would really appreciate it someone could send me a copy of it. Would also think others will find this hotfix really useful.
Mention of this hotfix has cropped up before - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverTS/thread/8fc71915-69b0-4702-b088-32e3bde09c4e. I just tried to get it via the Microsoft premier site, but it's not available! I'll enquire.
Hi, just wondered if you got the hotfix you were after? (and had the link)
No I wish I did though. I think I noticed there's a new similar hotfix for Vista only:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977983
I hope they release the ones for 2008 and 2008 R2 soon.
I found out why some of my login scripts don't work. Some parts of a user's registry are flagged as read only as their profile is created from the Default User Profile even if I change some permissions on the default profile registry. This is not the case in Windows Server 2003.
Another thing that's annoying the heck of me is I need to use the %clientname% variable to find the thin client name and it only seems to work after the desktop is finished loading?! I hope it's just that something I set somewhere else is blocking it.
Just had another search around and its odd that there's not the W2008 version of the hotfix available. I'm just going to drop an email to a contact who may be able to help. Will keep you posted.
My contact at Microsoft is on the case - will hopefully have some news today.
Response from Microsoft: "There is not a Win 2008 version of it. If you need it we will need to raise a case and specify the business impact"
Thanks for helping search for it. I've looked around and there are a ton of bugs in Group Policy Preferences. They should fix it for all platforms, not just Vista and XP. Why do people need Terminal Services Item Level Targeting fixed in Vista?!?! I don't get it.
Yes, I agree, it does seem strange!
I got an email from my Microsoft contact today. A Windows 2008 hotfix is now being engineered!
Cool! I hope they also fix 2008 R2 while they're at it. Thanks for your help!
More news! : Apparently you have to raise a support case to get hold of the hotfix.
A regular support case or a Premiere case?
Ah, good question - they didn't say. Just got told to raise a support case in order to be able to take delivery of the Win2008 fix.
(but we have a Premier agreement, so not sure if you need that, or regular).
