We have BESR disk image backups of our Citrix servers.

I'd like to use one of these images to create 1-2 additional Citrix servers within our ESX 3.5 cluster so one of the physical Citrix servers can be used for other purposes.

I know how to do P2V with VMware Converter -- would this be the recommended way to go about this?? Or use the Converter CD-ROM??

My goal is to convert an image into another Citrix server, eventually give it a new name, and add it to the farm as an additional server.

The physical server whose backup disk image would be used will not be removed from the farm.

Replies and references to other resources would be much appreciated.

Thank you, Tom

Hi Tom,

If you send me a direct message with your email I can provide a document I follow to reimage physical servers.

In a nutshell...

  1. Reimage your server
  2. Disconnect the patch cable and reboot
  3. Login and stop the IMA service
  4. Clear all the event logs
  5. Delete all files located under C:\Program Files\Citrix\Citrix Resource Manager\LocalDB and C:\Program Files\Citrix\Citrix Resource Manager\SummaryFiles
  6. Change the STA ID in the CtxSta.config using Notepad located in C:\Program Files\Citrix\System32 so the STA is unique. I usually just delete the last few characters and replace them with the server name
  7. Configure your NIC with the necessary IP info
  8. Remove it from the domain
  9. Run newsid.exe (can be dowloaded from MS)
  10. Reboot and connect the patch cable
  11. Once it is online add it back to the domain, add your load evaluators, assign a reboot schedule, etc.

Good luck!

Hi Tom,

I use XenAppPrep for customizing my servers before imaging. XenAppprep is a free Citrix tool.

 I blogged it out
