Hi

I am building out a test farm for XenApp for XenApp5, the last time we built our farm on PS4 we used MSDE on a member server. I am confused when I read the Admin guide for this new install becuase it says if using Access or SQL Express (which I thought was the MSDE replacement) you have to install locally on your first citrix the first server in the farm. I dont want to do this, I want it on its own server as we did server as I had with before with MSDE. Am I missing something really silly here, or have I read the admin guide incorrectly? Should I use MSDE and not SQL Express?

Sorry for the silly question but I am stumped.

Thanks

Darren

Yep you are right SQL Express is the new MSDE, you can also install this on a member Server and point your test farm to it.  Also the good news from Citrix is that Access and Express is supported for migration to Full SQL, Oracle or DB2.

hi emil

thanks, my confusion is that the admin guide for xenapp5 is saying that you have to install access / or sql express on your first citrix server, which is wrong, I want to do it as I have done before and as you say it can be done on a member server and point the citrix servers to it, i dont suppose you know of any links to docs for creating the data store with sql express on a member server do you.

thanks in advance

Actually, the admin guide is correct.

Citrix does not support the use of SQL Express (or MSDE) as an indirect datastore (such as SQL or Oracle). So while it may work fine with no issues, it is not a supported configuration.

In my personal opinion, if your farm is big enough that you are looking at SQL Express over Access, you need a SQL server.

Thanks for the reply, I wasnt aware that Citrix didnt support MSDE as an indirect datastore, the only reason for using MSDE is because I dont want the store on any one citrix box, many thanks for the reply though, that clears things up.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I setup Server with Access and a seperate SQLExpress server, when I ran the MigrateToSqlExpress.exe it came up with the error:

"SQL Server Express instance is not installed.  Install SQL Server Express and try again.

From the release notes for CPS 4.5 FP1:

"When the MigrateToSQLExpress.exe utility runs on an Access-based IMA data store, the IMA Service fails to restart, resulting in all database transactions completed by the utility being rolled back.

To avoid this problem, install Presentation Server and run the IMA data store configuration utilities in the following order:

  • Install Presentation Server 4.5
  • From a command prompt, run SetupSqlExpressForCPS.cmd (found in the Support folder of your Presentation Server installation CD)
  • Create a DSN file for SQLExpress (with Windows Authentication turned on)
  • Run dsmaint config /user:domain\administrator /pwd:password /dsn:"path\DSN file name"
  • From the \Support\SqlExpress_2005_SP1\ folder of your Presentation Server installation CD, run MigrateToSQLExpress.exe"
