I currently have a 4.0 farm with 2 servers in the DMZ running secure gateway 3.0.  I am wondering if anyone has upgraded to 4.5 and then to 5.0?  Is this a bad idea?  Should I start from scratch instead?  If I do this upgrade can I just leave my secure gateway alone?  Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks

i'll be interested to see what response you get.  we have a similar environment with 7 PS4.0 servers and a 4.0CSG.  we're wanting to go to XenApp 5.0.  i'm actually thinking of building a new XA5 farm and then just cutting over to it when we go live.  we did this same thing when we went from MetaFrame 1.8 to PS4.0.  but i'm having trouble with the XA5 documentation and understanding if i can just start fresh instead of having to go through the 4.0->4.5->5.0 path.  i'll be following your post to see what responses you get and i'll offer anything i find.

I am planning on going straight from 4.0 to 5.0.  I am hoping to go with new builds, but with so many pieces changing (OS, XA version, probably using UPM instead of FlexProfiles) I've got a lot of testing in front of me before I "throw the switch".  I will probably upgrade my WI/CSG first, though.  I've already tested WI 5.0/CSG 4.0 with both a 4.0 and 5.0 farm, and they get along fine.

I would be very interested in hearing anyone else's experience with XA5/W2K8.

Dan - can i ask you opinion on a part of your plan?  i hoping to do new builds as well.  but currently i have one license server that holds my licenses for my PS4.0 Test and Prod environments.  we've never really had a reason to split them out.  i'm hoping to take this opportunity to do that and use just a couple license for a new XA 5.0 Test environment before going on to build what will be my Prod environment - then hopefully be able to keep those 2 or 3 licenses just for Test in the future.  is that as simple as going to the MyCitrix site and "pulling back" 2 licenses, therefore creating a new license file that would then be used for my Test environment?  and would that then also me a new licenses file (minus the 2 i just pulled back) for my Prod environment?  we don't have budget for me to purchase any new licenses right now so i can't think of any other way to do it.  i'd appreciate your thoughts!

Yes, if you want to split your licenses across two license servers your only way of doing it is to "return" all of your licenses, then reallocate all minus 2 to your existing production server and allocate the remaining 2 to your new test server.  It should be fairly easy, providing you haven't done a bunch of reallocations, since you can only do it so many times.

thanks Dan.  that's what i was hoping for.  i've never done a reallocate before and i hope i don't after this one.  i figured if i got us started with 2 then i could add more later for Test purposes as we purchase additional licenses for our Prod environment.  then i wouldn't have to reallocate again.  just this once to get us started.  will this require users to be out of the system while i "install" the new license file for production though?

You don't have to have everyone off, but once you pull the old license file, you won't be able to accept new connections until the new license file is in place.

Hello Everybody

I am planning to upgrade our Citrix Server Farm to Xenapp 5.0 feature pack 1.

Environment & Current Version:

1) Single Farm

2) Two Zones ( We are using Zone1 for Production and Zone2 for Disaster Recovery)

Zone1                                      Zone2

1)      License server Ver 2.0            1) License server Ver 2.0

2)      Web Interface Ver 4.2            2) Web Interface Ver 4.2

3)      PS Ver 4.0                             3) PS Ver 4.0

At the moment Zone2 PS 4 servers are pointing to Zone1 License Server.

I would like to know what sequence should I follow to upgrade to XenApp 5.0

Regards,

Raki
