Why should I renew my Subscirption Advantage, in the Citrix XenApp / Presentation Server forum on BrianMadden.com

Hi,

We've had a reminder from Citrix regarding renewing a number of our licenses. Apart from hotfix downloads I can't see what else the Subscription Advantage gives us. Can anyone give me a reason to renew?

If you keep up with your subscription Advantage, you are entitled to the major version upgrades and feature releases.  Ergo, when Citrix announces 5.5 or 6.0, you can upgrade for free. Otherwise, you'll have to shell out the money to true-up to the upgrade, which will probably cost you the same amount as if you had your SA renewed.

At some point the version of Citrix you are running will be EOL. Unless you want to risk running it without support at that point, you'll have to upgrade.  The SA basically allows you to stay current at a smaller cost spread out over the years, instead of spending big money every 2-3 years to get current with your licenses.

Non-feature release hot fixes and roll ups are, I believe, always free without the SA.

Hi Ben,

this question is asked many times. from experience I can tell then all our customers who didn't apply the SA renewal they were disappointed that they needed to buy completely new licenses after a few years when they want to upgrade their Citrix environment.

If you take the opinion of upgrading each 3 years (and yes there will be upgrade from Citrix) you'll save money if you continue of renewing your SA. I guess your Citrix Partner can explain you the whole deal of the advantage of renewing your SA.

This is the way I understand it. 

Here’s the difference in cost (I'm estimating cost it won't be exact)
A new PS4 license cost you roughly $300 The SA on that license is $40 annually.    If you want to install Citrix Xen 5 there would be no additional cost to you if you paid your SA.   If you did not pay the SA then you would be buying a new license again to upgrade.    Or I think they may allow you to pay some penalties for letting your SA expire and give you an opportunity to catch up on SA.    Depending on the amount of licenses you have the difference in cost could be staggering.

SA is the cheapest way to go if you plan on keeping Citrix and upgrading as you go.

Licensing is the bread and butter of software behemoths like Microsoft and Citrix. I'm from Illinois where apparently "Pay to Play" was invented (just ask Mayor Daley & Gov. Blagojevich)!  

As Melanie points-out, they get you one way or another.

One intangible that wasn't mentioned though is how you're treated. I found that my Citrix regional sales manager was much more responsive to our needs when we were on SA and 9-5-x5 support than when we came off it. When we went to "per incident" support, I couldn't even get response to an e-mail! (You also get the "2nd string" support folks on your issues)

These are things you have to weigh-out from a business perspective. How critical is the Citrix piece in your environment? How often are they involved in your problem resolutions? Are your issues typically Windows or Citrix related? Do you operate on the bleeding edge of technology (and Citrix "upgrades"), or are you a conservative shop (don't fix what ain't broke)? Capitalization is another thing. Basically SA alows you to amortize your (impending) upgrades, rather than get hit all at once at EOS (or EOL).
