Hi!

As we learn that MS licenses Office per device we are searching for a solution to restrict or controll which servers clients can connect to, as we are running only thinclients (CE 5.0) we need to restrict access based on the MAC address the client has.

Is there anyway to do this? some third party app?

or how is this actually done in a citrix farm, if you don't want to buy MS office licenses for all of the users/devices connecting to the server farm.

i understand that if a thin client can be used to run office in a terminalserver we need one client office license .

Can anyone please try to enlighten me?

Thanks in Advance!

Hi Jan My name is Danny OConnor and I work for AppSense, I am responsible for Application Manager and from what I have read, Application Manager will do exactly what you require and has the added advantage of being certified by Microsoft for the exact purpose you intend. In AM you can very easily select exactly which machines, and only those machines can connect to a terminal server and run the various components of the office suite. you can simply select the relevant machines directly from Active directory if you wish, and because we use a kernel level filter driver AM cannot be bypassed. To learn more about Microsoft Licensing and how AppSense Application Manager can be used not only to ensure compliance, but also reduce the amount of licenses required, please visit http://www.appsense.com/solutions/licensemanagement.aspx There also a number of features that AM can provide that I will not go into right now. May I suggest you give us a call so we can help you. The number is+44 (0)161 216 3200 If you require any further information please don't hesitate to ask Regards Danny O'Connor AppSense

Thanks for you post!

BUT can you do this even when the machine is not in Active Directory, we have only thin clients that are not in the active directory.

Thanks again

Hi Jan Yes that should not be a problem as you can still allow by device regardless of whether you are part of an AD or not If you try www.appsense.com/evaluate you can download a 21day fully functioning evaluation. If you give us a call we can help you set it up. Regards Danny O'Connor

If the thin clients have static ip addresses you could assign a load evaluator to your Office applications that only allow users with the allowed IP addresses to connect.
