This is a complicated one, hopefully somebody can think of something I've missed.

We have a published app on an ancient Windows 2000 / Metaframe XP server that we have migrated to a less ancient PS 4.0 / Windows 2003 server. We are moving the users this weekend. Both servers have local network printers mapped and on the old server, some users can map their client printers while others cannot. This is the desired behavior. However, on the new server these same users' local printers are mapped and they can see other users' mapped printers. This is causing confusion with the users.

Both farms are set to allow clients to map local printers. This setting is also true for the servers' local ICA and RDP connections. So, there must be something configured on the Windows 2000 server to block client local printers for certain groups. The problem is, I can't find anything anywhere. Nothing in domain or local group policy or local security policy. Is there somewhere else I can look? The previous admin left and didn't leave any documentation so I'm stuck. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

It sounds like you have made your users either Power Users or Administrators on the W2K/PS4 server - avoid this at all cost! Users who are members of the local Power Users or Administrators group will see other user's printers. If you have apps that supposedly require administrative perms, use Process Monitor to figure out which REG keys or files are getting blocked.

On a related topic, if you want administrators to be able to properly manage client printers, you need to make the changes outlined in this CTX article:

The PS4 server is actually Windows 2003, not W2K.

The only members of Power Users are two local accounts, Ctx_ConfigMgr and Ctx_SmaUser. I assume they were put there by the Citrix installation. I'm going to do some more digging and see if there's a local policy I can apply to specific domain groups to disallow mapping client printers. Now that I think about it it's possible that the client isn't seeing other users' mapped printers, I will confirm.
