PS4.0 and WI on Win2K3 SP2 server. users connect through Cisco VPN then type URL of WI site.

i noticed today when testing access to user H:\ drive (i launched Notepad as my example) that i got a pop up on the test workstation to Restart Now or Restart Later for Windows Updates. i'm pretty sure that's the prompt from when we applied WU's to the servers earlier today and they'll be rebooted later tonight for their monthly reboots. i don't think my users are getting this prompt because (1) no one has called to complain and (2) the servers have not been accidentally rebooted (which a user would most likely do seeing that prompt). i'm wondering if the reason i saw it was because i logged into the WI as myself (a Domain Admin). if that's the case, that's okay. just curious if anyone has seen this and what your thoughts are on it.

okay, so this definitely has something to do with credentials. cuz this time, i logged on with a test account that's just a regular user. i opened notepad, and upon launching notepad, got the prompt to Restart Now or Restart Later, but the Restart Now was grayed out. so at least if users are getting it (and not telling me) they can't "accidentally" reboot the server. but how do i turn this notification off? i'm sure it's a GP thing and i'm assuming it would stop the prompt for everyone, which would be fine, cuz as the Admin i'm aware of the reboot schedule.

Do you have Automated Updates enabled? I usually disabled them, but leave the service running so we can use SMS to push other patches out.

Why is it called "Common Sense"? It doesn't seem all that common!

yes, we have the Automatic Updates service running. i thought that had to be running so the server could get it's updates from our SMS server. have i misunderstood that?

we've changed our wsus policy to disabled for allow non-administrators to receive updates notifications. hopefully that was it.

You should never be autoupdating the servers while users on the system. It is a dangerous game you play if the updates put the server into install mode.

I usually disable Windows Updates on Citrix Servers, as I don't want Microsoft or some other admin who's not responsible for Citrix (or Terminal Servers) pushing updates that haven't been tested on Citrix. One could also have a dedicated WSUS server for the Citrix Farm, that's managed by the Citrix admins.
