The problem with CAPTCHA is that they all have a way to be circumvented. We had it on the old site and it didn't matter one bit.

The pay-for services are relatively inexpensive, so we're working to get one--akismet--integrated.  Then it will be more like an email spam filter.

Forcing new members' posts isn't a bad idea - I just don't know if we can do it :) I'll have to look into it.

Also, I'm wondering if, in the meantime, you and Alan would like to be moderators. It'd be a huge help for us to have you guys flagging the things you see.  If so, shoot me an email and we can see about getting that turned on.

Thanks!

We've got akismet integrated now, so hopefully we'll see a significant reduction in spam.  It looks to be doing its job, but we'll keep an eye on it.

Thanks everyone for keeping on us about it!

It looks like people have found another way to SPAM. It seems that when people comment on other people's profiles, it triggers it to be posted on the main page under recent activity (how I try to keep up with what is going on). Any way perhaps that particular trigger can be disabled from displaying there?

That is a great idea...for someone like a moderator to approve posts... but not the captcha thing it's annoying. That everytime you try to reply it will ask you to enter the code.
