I'm having a problem with file transfers between the client and server. Users are saying that when they are browsing the mapped drive back to their PC that it is very slow. I have been replacing some Metaframe 1.8 Servers on NT 4 with some Metaframe XPE R3 on Windows 2003. They say the NT Servers are faster.

I'm not sure what I can do to improve performance. Any ideas??

I have been having the same complaints from users. We are running 2003 Server and PS4. Copying from mapped drive to local drive is what they are complaining about. I have not found any KB articles or other documentation on this issue.

I was reading another article that gave a suggestion. I still need to run a test. If someone wants to elaborate on this more that would be nice.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296264/

and

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=888562

Apparently this affects ICA clients as well as RDP, although I thought ICA was it's own protocol and SMB would not be playing any role in it, but it says it does in this article. Which is for NT 4, but is still relevant.

I will be testing this in the next few days to see if my response times get better.

Nobody seems to know the answer. My Citrix stuff is slow freakin slow.

Office 2003
Windows 2003

I've added the TcpAckFrequency thing, but it didn't work. I'm not sure if I need the patch since I already have SP1 installed.

DNS and bandwidth are ok?

DNS is Fine.

I have called both of them shelled out $650, and this is the answer I have so far.

I've had Microsoft on the phone for 3 days now. They have essentially said that RDP is slow by design. "Thanks Microsoft". But I have a hard time believing that.

If RDP is slow by design, what does that say for Citrix’s ICA protocol? Citrix is pointing their finger at Microsoft.

Well I found the fix and it sucks I spent so much time and money.

I started my migration about a month ago and that's when I started hearing about the issue. I checked Citrix's hotfixes and didn't find anything. (I probably didn't know what words to use.) Well at that time Security Rollup was Release 1. There was a Release 2 put out. Guess how long ago. A month! I must have missed the release. I suck. I hate spinning wheels.

Oh well. After applying the latest all is well. Although RDP still doesn't work. I'm going to see if I can at least get my cash back from Microsoft.

And Citrix support should have taken my money and told me about the release, but instead they pointed their finger at Microsoft. I'm highly disappointed with Citrix tech support as of right now. I have never called them before and I hope I never have to call them again. What a waist of cash.

I just looked and I can't find a Hotfix Rollup #2 for CPS 4.0 and W3K3 Server. Do you have a specific hotfix number I can reference?

Thanks!

There is no rollup 2 for PS4 yet. I believe he was referencing MFXP roll up 2.

Yup - I mixed up the Guest post right under the original post. Thanks for the clarification!

I was refering to MF XP FR3 SP 4.

I didn't actually find a reference to any specific hotfix in SR 2. The list of fixes doesn't even mention a slowness issue, but it is definitly what fixed my issue.

I know this is old, but I'm bringing it back up. Although my complaint have dwindled since the SR2 release I still have very slow file transfers using client drive mappings.

Usually users are saving reports from Word, Excel, Crystal Reports and the like. Everything is fine when using a network drive mapping to a server local to the Metaframe Servers.

I have talked with the Network guys about QOS and they say it won't help. (Not sure exactly why.) They say that there is plenty of bandwidth, so it's not like we are having congestion.

I've read so many articles about this and so many people are having issues I would have thought I would find a resolution by now.

I would think that the problems are only with really distant users in Europe and Asia, but I'm in Texas and a site in Cali. has the same issues.

I have reduced the problem to just Microsoft office 2003. Excel and word are slow saving files to client drive mapping.

Does anyone use office 2k3 and have this issue?

You know I still have this problem.  I never found out how to make the saving of data faster.  Anyone ever figure this out?
