This paper is vintage now! It's a paper that I first wrote in early 2000 when I was a principal consultant at a (now defunct) company called FrontWay. To this day, though, it provides a decent overview of the advantages of ubiquitous and server-centric computing models.

An organization’s IT department is successful if it can create true business value. The ability to create this value is directly impacted by the technologies and platforms that have been adopted, and the IT department’s ability to continuously provide access to up to date applications and data. FrontWay’s Ubiquitous Computing Group (UCG) knows that IT departments exist for one reason – to create business value by providing end-users access to applications and data. FrontWay also knows that servers, networks, and all infrastructure represent a cost center to an organization, as opposed to a profit center. FrontWay helps clients integrate applications with the needed infrastructure, technology, and business processes that enable them to focus on core business objectives.
