Last week, a little-known VDI vendor called Desktone landed $17 million in funding for their software designed to compete in the growing xDI space. Part of that funding came from Citrix, whose DDI (Dynamic Desktop Initiative) campaign is in direct competition (or not...depends who you ask) with VMware's VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure).
Desktone vDesktop's niche in the xDI market is that it provides a turnkey solution to enterprises trying to bring in a new desktop deliver mechanism. From the press release: "It uniquely integrates all virtualization layers – including storage, applications, client devices, servers, processing and network technologies – and enables them to be controlled by a single management console."
Since I don't know much about Desktone, I emailed their CTO, Clint Battersby, and asked him for a brief, but technical, explanation. Clint has been involoved with zero administration desktops since the early 90's, even before the Microsoft Zero Administration Kit. Here's what he had to say:
"Desktone reduces a broad range of complex technology choices into simple configuration checkboxes to finally deliver low cost desktop computing to the enterprise. Desktone is also working with key service providers to provide the most cost effective solutions available in the market.
The challenge is to leverage existing hardware / software combined with Desktone’s unique innovation to provide the best desktop experience at the lowest possible cost."
That doesn't really answer all the questions, but I gather that Desktone regards the current desktop provisioning methods as being too complicated, and their product will change all that.
