A/V Offloading is a great feature, there is no need to run an antivirus solution inside each virtual machine. I'm happy that McAfee is the first to the market with this...this is without a doubt the type of thing the world has been waiting for.

We are just in the middle of a project here in germany where we have to migrate 2400 seats from all kind of old desktops and laptops to a new standard laptop model (and we don't need to reinstall anything).

Great management benfits at low costs, usable for all desktops and laptops, online and offline.

I think this tool can deliver a lot of the benefits our customers expected from VDI...not all, but a lot of :-)

I'm very curious about how this company will envolve...

Not sure why anyone would be surprised that UDP/RTP traffic should be used for VoIP/Video or real time communications traffic. VoIP is mature technology (10+ years) and UDP/RTP has always been the default choice for the protocol.

Stay tuned for information on MS Lync

Wow, that sounds quite a bit like SpeedScreen Multimedia Redirection in MetaFrame XP FR3.

Citrix has already passed this level of integration with XenDesktop and is now pursuing Video calling aggressively. We demonstrated this at Cisco Live for the last 2 years in the Wyse booth using Cisco Unified Communications and XenDesktop.

Most recently with XenDesktop 5.5 Citrix has added UDP/RTP support which will avoid placing the IP Phone traffic inside TCP as well as passing through the native codecs. There are also updated voice codecs that Citrix has developed to reduce the bandwidth requirements beyond native Windows formats.

All this work Citrix has been doing allow them to seamlessly integrate with the soft phone without requiring any special changes to the application.

VMware on the other hand developed their own API, that softphone vendors have to target with their products in order to support. This means that VMware will have to drive adoption of their API's with Cisco, Microsoft and many others to get full value out of this solution.

Good question about Lync above, we've been helping customers with that too: support.citrix.com/.../CTX128831

1. The adoption rate of desktop virtualization

2. Desktop virtualization is not about saving money

3. Don't forget about the traditional desktops

4. Windows sucks and is making our lives difficult

5. Storage

5A. Storage management is not image management

6. Client-based desktops

6A. Bare metal Type 1 client hypervisors

6B. Don't forget about Type 2 for clients

7. ODPU (One desktop per user)

8. The Consumerization of IT

9. The Desktop versus the desktop

10. The future of Windows

The overall presentation was similar to the one I gave at Citrix Synergy a few months ago, except I went into much more detail since I was able to talk for 1h45m instead of just 45m.

BTW, @Laptop, The local desktop is dead. Deal with it.

To follow on from yesterdays discussion: www.brianmadden.com/.../citrix-announces-xenclient-2-with-video-demo-from-synergy-2011.aspx

and in reply to @hhernandez...

It seems to me that XT is targeting a very small use case ("1%") of desktops that have to be super secure like my Wifes "special" dinner set. - never actually seen it... she makes me eat off paper plates most of the time!

If its the case or not... I get the feeling/impression that all this type1/baremetal goodness is driven towards laptops and desktops are seen as a small (but important) use case. Marketing getting in the way again?

My view is that laptops are a great use case for this technology but "general" desktops that don't require bitchin secure3000 protection and god like military standard networking are potentially a huge use case for this stuff.

In addition to that little rambling and not limited to XenClient, all this type 1 stuff is geared up as a very "named user" model which fits in with the focus on laptops.. The sort of use cases I was taking about yesterday were a very multi user type environments like a lab/uni or training centre... Which from what I've seen is not catered for at all (without cumbersome workarounds/hacks).
