Geek Week VDI: VMware View WAN experience testing (Part 3)

Written on Mar 30 2010 6,098 views, 3 comments

by Gabe Knuth

The purpose of this video was to test the user experience of VMware View 4 over a variety of user environments, including:

  • 100mbps LAN connection (2:00)
  • A "global" WAN scenario, with 768kbps, variable latency between 250-350ms, and 1% packet loss (9:50)
  • A "cross country" WAN scenario, with 1.5mbps, 75-150ms latency, and 0.5% packet loss (24:41)
  • A "metro" WAN scenario, with 5.0mbps, 30-40ms latency, and 0.5% packet loss (33:33)

Note about packet loss: Throughout the video, we variably referred to the "global" and the "cross country" scenarios as having either 1% or 0.5% packet loss. I can assure you that regardless of what we said on camera, the on-screen text (which matches the specifications above) is accurate. Only the "global" scenario had 1% packet loss. The others were set to 0.5%.

These videos are delivered via RTSP streaming, which means you can click and drag the playhead to any point in the video. The mm:ss times listed above correspond to the beginning of that section.

For a full analysis of the results of this video, read our summary of how VMware View 4 did in our Geek Week: VDI project. This video is part of our "Geek Week: VDI" project where Gabe and Brian tested five VDI products in five days. Does Build-to-lossless performance depend on the resolution.

PCoIP is certainly a great display protocol.  However in some scenarios of slow remote connections (like over certain WANs) there may be issues where PCoIP doesn't function quite as well.  In those cases, you can complement the VMware View deployment with Ericom Blaze, a software-based RDP acceleration and compression product that provides improved performance over WANs. Besides delivering higher frame rates and reducing screen freezes and choppiness, Blaze accelerates RDP performance by up to 10-25 times, while significantly reducing network bandwidth consumption over low-bandwidth/high latency connections.

You can use VMware View with PCoIP for your LAN and fast WAN users, and at the same time use VMware View with Blaze over RDP for your slow WAN users.  This combined solution can provide enhanced performance in both types of environments, letting you get the best out of VMware View for your users.

I don't think this is a fair statement. Although bigotry exists, there are a number of variable why someone is sentenced harsher than others.
