Citrix Pservers virtualized

I am installing a Vmware Farm w\ Citrix Servers virtualized. Why? Well most importantly, the customer failed to fully plan out the install. We have run into issues, regarding POWER!!!... The Physical servers are 1u boxes, with max of 20 users. (win2k3 limitations, as 20 users will hit 3.5gb of ram). Win 64 was not a option. With Vmware, we are able to get 4x ctx servers per ESX server= 4:1 ratio, 4u versus 2u. Which doesnt seem like much. BUT consilidating 32 Citrix servers down to 8 is HUGE saving of power. Not to mention that th esx servers are also hosting , load balanced web interface servers, load balanced Citrix CSG servers, edgesight, 5 one off servers for special apps.. So yah, virtulization of citrix servers is indeed a tech that will work. ALSO this is a 640 user citrix farm. no issues at all.
and these are heavy citrix users. NOW on other custoemr, we have overf 1000 users on 3 ESX servers (published apps, versus published desktops) and performance still is there.

Depends on how you install it, and the conifguration. The customer is really happy about the fact of the ability to deploy new citrix servers in 10min, versus the 8hr, previously.

I don't know about the rest of you, but if you manage a large environment with some of the Citrix Add-ons.. You dont know how unbelieviably awesome it will be with the Powershell change. I am stoked! I just wish they would do it sooner.. I guess I am still writing my own Powershell CMDLets for now

Hi Tom, as much as Xen requires 64bit processor/hardware I think you'll find that most of the Hardware shipped for the last 3 years or so has this support already built in? Somebody please chime in if I've got this wrong?

I think the main thing that Xen is missing at the moment is a Workstation version that can be installed on existing OS's like Laptop's so that we can get familiar with it, build Client Demo's etc. It's not to say that it's not possible, but if you have to resort to run VMware Worksation or MS's Virtual PC/Server *before* even running Xen, and then running your guest systems on top of that then there is clearly going to be some overhead?

I had a look at this very closely in the Tech Labs and when you looked even a little close at the Icons on the desktop there was clear JPG artification around the edges of the desktop icons - couple this with the way the Citrix chap jumped as I reached for the mouse on the Thin Client, and pointed out to me that he's drive it from the Server End as in a Shadowed session? This was the same as in the Keynote, it was driven from the Server UI.

My personal opinion is that I can't see too many business's thinking that this is the justification for getting the latest version of CPS?

On a side note, if Citrix really wants to help add a value proposition to encourage people to migrate or upgrade from XP 1.8 then they would better off looking at instigating a project to provide WSUS like fuctionality? I know it wouldn't be perfect, and have as many problems as benefits, but it would provide momentum?

The Aero glass effect was the main point of the demo. It was not perfect, but I though it was an impressive start. The video in the demo was poor because SS multimedia is not included in port ica (intenally know as portica). Impressive but a long way to go. Hence the "moon shot" Apollo name. I'm glad to hear Citrix say:

-Performance needs to be as good or better than the desktop
-This will take a hugh "moon shot" effort (and surely take more than 2k of RAM)
-Short of this, VD-whatever won't stand much of a chance.

Time will tell is they can keep make this goal.

What guest said. It isn't clear that Citrix has decided how to name these things, but Delaware will be 08 only. Citrix will no doubt provide a 4.5 add on in the form of a feature pack that will bring some of the Delaware features to 03, but not those that depended on kernel changes in the 08 platform. But nobody I talked to would commit to what or when. And I don't think they were being coy - I really don't think they yet know what they will or will not be able to do on 03.

Delaware will be WS08 only, there will be more Feature Packs in the timeframe between now and Parra, which will provide certain Delaware (and other new) features on W2K3.

It's unclear to me from your description whether Delaware will require WS08 to run or just for the new features. If Delaware does require WS08 to run, does this mean the 4.5 will be the last version of CPS (barring feature packs) to support WS03?

99% of vendors never let competitors into their big shows. You don't see IBM presenting at BEA World, nor do you see SAP booths and sessions at Oracle Open World. And I don't recall seeing the Juniper booth at Cisco Networkers. The fact that Citrix is moving in this direction is a good thing. I, for one, am looking forward to May to see what they deliver.
