Seeing Kevin Goodman's name in the Brian's article yesterday reminded me of a great session that he presented at BriForum in Amsterdam.  In "Don't Terminate that App: Four Things to do Before Killing that Rogue Process," Kevin talks about what to do (and what not to do) before killing that hung process.  From the session description:

"When a process goes "rogue" and starts consuming CPU or memory, most admins typically kill the process -- ending all chances of figuring out what went wrong. In this session, Kevin Goodman explains four things to be done prior to terminating a process that will help determine why the process went rogue in the first place and how to prevent it from happening the next time."

So, check this out--it might help you streamline your environment and narrow down the root cause of those pesky hung processes. Click the image below to launch the video:

Can you tell me where I can get the Suspend Process Utility mentioned in this presentation?

There is a link to the Zip file containing Suspend.exe under the image, just in case it's not working, here it is again.

Can this be used on a Windows 2000 server? With a running process?

The code is not using any APIs that are XP or SRV03 only so it should work. Are you having problems?
