  • An in-depth analysis of the Microsoft-Kidaro deal. What does this mean for VMware, Citrix, and the industry?

Yesterday Microsoft bought desktop virtualization vendor Kidaro for an undisclosed amount (although rumors suggest as much as $100M). Kidaro makes virtualization software and management tools that "package" Windows desktop images into VMs that can run locally on users' computers. It's a lot like VMware's ACE product, although Kidaro has much better management capabilities....

Most VDI solutions today make use of the RDP protocol. But RDP was designed for remoting business apps, which is very different than providing an entire local desktop experience remotely. Can RDP do this? Will it need to be extended like ICA? What about the other protocols and vendors out there, like ALP, SPICE, Net2Display, Calista Technologies, Teradici, and DeskTone?...

  • VMware buys Thinstall! What does this mean?

Today VMware announced they're acquiring application virtualization vendor Thinstall for an undisclosed amount of money. Thinstall has an application virtualization product that's similar to Microsoft SoftGrid, Citrix's Application Streaming, or Symantec / Altiris's SVS technology. Does this mean that VMware is finally climbing up the value stack into the application space?

  • Citrix iForum becomes "Citrix Synergy"

Citrix has changed the name of their flagship conference again. After calling it "Citrix iForum" from 1999 - 2006, and then renaming it to the "App Delivery Expo" for 2007, the 2008 event will be called "Citrix Synergy." If you can get over the "three names in three years" thing, I think this is actually a good move. The "App Delivery Expo" was not a good name. It was too long and hard to remember....
