Presentation Server 4.5 can trace its roots directly back to the WinFrame product of the late 1990s . However, Citrix MetaFrame XP, first released in 2001, established the core product architecture that today's Presentation Server is based on. In other words, if you know MetaFrame XP, you're about 75% of the way there in terms of knowing PS 4.5. There have been several major and minor product updates over the years, including:

Year Product name
2001 MetaFrame XP
2002 MetaFrame XP with Feature Release 1
2002 MetaFrame XP with Feature Release 2
2003   MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, with Feature Release 3
2004 MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0
2005 Presentation Server 4.0
2007 Presentation Server 4.5
2007 Presentation Server 4.5, with Feature Pack 1

Citrix has gotten pretty good about announcing future plans. At this point we know the roadmap for Presentation Server looks like something like this:

Year Code name Release name
2008 Delaware XenApp *
2009 Parra ?

* Note that "XenApp" will be the new name from Presentation Server on the Windows Server 2008 platform only. Presentation Server running on Windows Server 2003 will still be called "Presentation Server." See the next section for more details.
