BrianMadden.com’s “master” list of vendors

[NOTE: this page is available at brianmadden.com/vendors]

As I wrote a few months ago, Gabe and I are tracking over 100 vendors in the desktop and application virtualization space. We’re trying to talk to all of them in 2009, and while that sounds crazy at first, I’ve already met with 47 of them in just under four months!

We discussed the best way to share this information with the readers of BrianMadden.com, and so far we’ve settled on something called a “Brian Dump,” which is like a brain-dump that I can quickly write after I sit down with the vendor. Unfortunately that plan hasn’t worked out too well, because I’ve only written one brain dump so far. The good news is that I have pages and pages of notes, so I’m going to try to catch up with the Brian Dumps over the next month or so, perhaps writing one each day in addition to the regular posts.

Anyway, Gabe and I are also struggling to figure out the best way to keep track of all these vendors and to share as much information as we can about each one. Ultimately it would be really cool to build a Crunchbase-style database, but that’s a lot of work and we’d need an intern or something to keep it up-to-date. In the meantime, we’ve been sharing an Excel spreadsheet via Dropbox, and we thought “Why not just make that public?”

So here it is:

We’re going to now use/edit/update this blog post to keep track of all the vendors that we cover. Specifically, we’re looking at:

  • The actual list of vendors.
  • The vendors where we’ve written a “Brian Dump”
  • The vendors who have been on Brian Madden TV, either through a feature (where we chose to cover them) or via the Random Vendor of the Week drawing.

If you have any updates, suggestions, or thoughts about this, please share them below. Otherwise we’ll keep this up-to-date.

Here’s our current list, as of April 27, 2009:

Where is Sun Microsystems on this list? It would be great if  you could talk to those guys soon. It seems as if they have continued to invest and improve n their products in this space.

You can add www.Ulteo.com, the open source SBC and upcoming VDI solution

ummm, how come you left out Sun? Have you looked at the x86/x64 products lately? How about Sun Ray Ultra Thin Clients? Sun Ray improves by orders of magnitude with each new release of the software, and yet, there is no requirement to replace or even upgrade a current vintage desktop device. Doesn't that have value?? There are now connectors for all the popular application providers on the backend with improvements coming for those in the near futrue. Come on Brian, give it another look.

Regarding Sun, we already changed that to "Oracle" :) Although I noticed that Oracle is on there twice, which means for some reason Oracle as on there before Sun?!? I'll update it to put Oracle and Sun together.

And for Ulteo, yep.. good call.

Neoware was purchased by HP

Got it... Thanks!

You could add Double-Take Software. Last month, they released Flex v3.0, similar in functionality to Ardence.

Oh wow! Thanks for that. I didn't know they were in our space.. I still thought of them as a data replication and availability company.

Correct - that continues to be a critical focus, but with the acquisition of emBoot in August '08, Double-Take has since launched 2 new versions of software buillt on the emBoot technology, now called Flex.

Hi,

You can also add Chip PC.

Their is some new Thin Client under Linux with a very high graphical performance and 3 Watt max with a very small form factor.

They also include some video hardware video acceleration.

Hi Brian,

In the application virtualization space, you could check out :

BoxedApp - http://www.boxedapp.com/

AppZero - http://www.appzero.com

KBOX & Computers in Motion (joined together) - http://www.kace.com + www.computersinmotion.com

Hello Brian,

I wonder why I dont see Slick Access on your vendors list, We started working with the product and it has technological advantages on competative vendors,

do you have it on another website?

Thanks

Eyal

HI Brian,

would like to suggest that you look into NoMachine an Open Source initiative from Italy, I think.

Martin

NoMachine should definitely be added to the list considering you've got 2x up there, and 2x exists thanks to NoMachine!!

I agree!  NoMachine is definitely making their mark with NX in the desktop and application delivery industry.  They should be added to the list.

I'm missing LISCON

Operating system + sophisticated management software and selling thin clients

All caught up to this point.  Thanks all for contributing.

Thanks Gabe for adding.

By the way - what's about XTS Inc? www.xtsinc.com/ is blacklisted in Firefox and Google as a site containing malware.

and LUFlogix is in the list - that's a fake - right?

one more contribution - www.brianmadden.com/vendors isn't working.

cheers Chris
