If anyone has a spare hour today, I'll be giving a webcast with Cisco and VMware at 11:00 Eastern time (16:00 GMT). Registration is required, which may be done here.

The general flow of the webcast is that I'll do a quick 15 minute intro about the challenges of using VDI via the WAN. Then the folks from VMware and Cisco will talk about how their stuff works together to fix the challenge.

Looking at the PPTs that they will use, I don't think the VMware stuff will be new to anyone reading this post on BrianMadden.com. (In fact, as of last night, the slides I saw talked about VDM2 and not View 3?!? Hopefully they're updating those.)

But the Cisco stuff looks interesting. I much more familiar with Citrix WANscaler and Expand's solutions than I am Cisco's WAN accelerators. (Actually I'm not even sure I knew that Cisco had WAN accelerators?)

I've worked enough with these accelerators to know what to look for. So I'll be curious to see:

  • How is Cisco handling SMB signing for their CIFS acceleration? Do they add themselves to the domain?
  • In order to cache and optimize RDP, compression must be disabled. So when they show graphic charts showing how much less bandwidth RDP consumes via Cisco, is that with compression on or off? (In other words, do they make the charts look extra good for them by comparing their stuff to uncompressed RDP, when in fact everyone in the real world uses the out-of-the-box compression?)
  • They talk about printing optimization. How is this affected by the ThinPrint capability that's built into VMware View 3?
  • Ironically, Cisco does not have a specific application accelerator for RDP, even though this is a VDI webcast. Do they plan on that soon? Or is their main solution to focus on everything else, thereby opening up more room for RDP in a de facto way?

And I'm sure the BrianMadden.com audience will have many more questions than these!

The webcast will be archived for later viewing.

Brian

I started to watch this, but got to about 17 minutes in when Liad is struggling to get his sentences strung together - is it worth watching beyond that point? There doesn't seem to be any kind of fastforward button, which is a shame.

Is there some kind of Cisco product which the presentation ultimately describes, perhaps NBAR?

Cheers

Andy
