SearchWinIT is reporting from Microsoft Tech Ed 2008 in Barcelona that Microsoft announced that the new version of Terminal Server will not be called Terminal Server. Instead, it will be called "Remote Desktop Services." This is probably a good move for several reasons:

• The name Terminal Server doesn't really describe what this feature does.
  
• Remote Desktop services can apply remote desktops for workstations (VDI) as well as TS servers.

Ok, so now we have server-based remote desktops, and client-based remote desktops. Wait... that doesn't make sense. Ok, so now we have server-based computing, with server backends and client backends. Hmm.. that doesn't make sense either. Ok, so now we have remote desktops, which can be served from client OSes or server OSes.

Actually, this is great.. because it's all SBC, it's just that some is single-user, and some is multi-user. Good stuff.

It appears that this name will become real when Microsoft releases the next version of TS RDS, which will be part of Windows Server 2008 R2, currently scheduled for 2010.

I agree - good move

My only issue with the name is that Microsoft has introduced application publishing in WS08

"Remote Desktop Services" implies desktop publishing only
