Speculation: Citrix will Announce MPS 3.0 Feature Release 1 Details at iForum

There's a lot of talk floating around that Citrix is going to announce the features that will be included in MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 Feature Release 1 at iForum in a few weeks.

Feature Release 1 is codenamed "Colorado" and should be released to the public in the first half of 2005. As of now, Tony Marzulli (Citrix's VP of Marketing) is scheduled to give the technical keynote on day two of iForum. If Citrix keeps with their past patterns, Marzulli will probably wow the audience by demonstrating (with the help of Brian Nason) some of the new features.

It doesn't appear that FR-1 / Colorado will have any major changes, but some of the features expected include:

• Application performance management. (a la Aurema, etc.)
• Application sandboxing. (Side by side DLL support, etc.)
• A major printing fix. (A driverless solution perhaps?)
• A command-line change farm utility.

http://www.uspto.gov holds the answer. All the third-party print solution
vendors like UniPrint, ThinPrint, TriCerat have secured their solutions
with patents.
UniPrint for TIF(!) and PDF, ThinPrint for EMF, and TriCerat also for EMF.
(Yes both for EMF! But TriCertat was second so obviously their patent
request is worthless.)

Would they really risk a patent violation fiasco?

Maybe "speculation" is not the right word. Of course this isn't "fact" because I'm talking about a future event that hasn't happened yet. I chose the word speculation because I _think_ this is what's going to happen. I'll let you know for sure in three weeks!

I would like to see Uniprint sell their solution for $100/server, for the MS Terminal Services only community. I guess someone needs to show Citrix that these small fixes only temporarily patch the big leaks, while their lack of ideas and knowledge of the new markets (say hello to IBM, SAP, MS, etc, etc.) they want to head into will ultimately be their demise.

The interestning part will be to see how they build in these features. I think we would have ween press activity if they bought companies. Maybe they have made OEM agreements or build in parts of 3-part products. Yep, we will see in three weeks!

Yikes! I think either sandboxing or performance management by itself would constitute a major change. Let's see... Citrix can either add value to it's product or reduce price... I'll take the value, please. So what do you say constitutes a major change, Brian?

MSAM's next release (Firecracker) is expected to be complete in the next 1-3 months - in Citrix's way of doing things, I suspect they will talk more about this product's enhancements as well as their GO-TO-MY-PC strategy. Remember, Citrix is now an Access Strategy solution vendor that wants to make One Billion Dollars - hopefully they aren't forgetting what got them here.

For the record, triCerat abandoned its EMF-based printing platform over a year ago. Beginning with ScrewDrivers V3, we adopted a Postscript-based process that has some significant advantages over EMF. Chiefly, triCerat’s process works with any application you can run from a Terminal Server – unlike EMF.

Correct info would be that Tricerat still has to use EMF first eh, as that is what most MS apps generate when printing?....then convert to postscript. Similar to what Citrix UPD II for postscript does.
