There's a rumor floating around Citrix that they're planning to buy a third-party performance vendor to beef-up the value that MetaFrame Presentation Server adds on top of pure Terminal Services. In talking to different people over the past few days, I've heard that Citrix is planning to buy Appsense, Aurema or RTO. (Clearly they'll only buy one of the three companies.) Does hearing three companies instead of one make this rumor seem more reliable or less reliable? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Personally, I think it would be fantastic if Citrix bought one of these performance vendors. (Ron and I even listed this as one of the key things that Citrix could do to make their product a "must have.") These third-party performance management applications have become a de-facto standard for Citrix deployments, and a purchase here would definitely make Citrix look attractive on top of Microsoft's upcoming Bear Paw Terminal Server enhancement.

Citrix should also think about purchasing a good printing solution, and drop the impossible dream known as the "universal print driver". It would cost much less in the long run to purchase a good, already proven, printing solution. Sticking to the topic mentioned above, I think purchasing AppSense would make Sense.

As we all know, MS are closing in on Citrix when it come to “small” business (up to 500 users) and Citrix have not done any revolutionary changes on MF since XP came.
I believe, even if this is a rumour that as Brian said in a old article that this is necessary for them to stay ahead, by buying for example Appsense they would take a huge step to expand the gap between the two.
OBS! One thing to rely think about is, what if MS buys one of these companies? And more interesting, what if the buy one off them before Citrix dose, then the SBC world would be very interesting…
As everybody that have worked whit SBC know, these lockdown tools is a must when it comes to large companies, we can only hope that this rumour is true…

Having just come back from the Citrix Customer Forum and seeing their
roadmap for the future..(NDA can't tell you) I highly doubt this one.

So if you saw Citrix's roadmap, and buying a performance management company is not on it, that leaves one question: Why wouldn't Citrix do this? I mean if Citrix wants to add value to the pure TS space, why wouldn't they spend a few dollars to buy one of these companies? Or are they just going to develop this functionality on their own?...

Citrix is focusing strictly on ACCESS INFRASTRUCTURE. It involves not only their core products but how people are accessing them and improving on ways to how they can access.

I don't know where this rumor started but I can say that I also know from talking to key people WHO CALLED ME ABOUT THIS RUMOR, at least in 2 of the 3 companies you mention that there is no deal in the works and I doubt the third since Citrix doesn't usually go after European companies.

While I do agree this would be a welcome addition to the product I find it unlikely nevertheless.

I have recently brought a pilot of MetaFrameXP 3, and during the initial set up Appsense was mentioned atleast a couple of times. I would not be surprised if they picked up Appsense.

but the deal fell through. That is the source of the rumor. Although it is possible that the deal is back on....who knows. None of this matters until/if they actually OBTAIN the software and then of course they need to DO something with it!!!!

Acquisitions have not exactly been their strong suit.

Citrix in the SMB space is a no go and it has NOTHING to do with whether or not they acquire CPU management, printing, or any other thing. It's the fact that they are design and priced for the enterprise. Period.

If they do get Appsense, or triCerat, or whomever, it's going to add to their enterprise value...not provide them with entry into the SMB marketplace. They'd have to change a whole lot more about their business, i.e. how they sell, to accomplish that.

Bill Burley works there. He used to run sales for Citrix and even though there was a lot of turnover (including him), he still has a lot of friends on the sales team at Citrix. So, it stands to reason that some Citrix sales people talk about AppSense. Whether or not it is any good or worth the $$, they have a friendship with Bill.

Citrix will be announcing that...or maybe acquiring, but more likely an announcement.

High end, geared towards enterprise deployments as one would expect given their strategy.

I just came back from a week of vacation, and I can promise you that Citrix has not acquired us. I can also promise you that there are no dicussions underway with Citrix on the topic of them acquiring RTO.

As a customer that is deciding on whether to go all out with Citrix or to go with a more limited deployment (remote access, low bandwidth) this is the kind of value I would like added. This makes much more sense to me than products like Password manager. The cost of MPS has got us thinking twice considering we will be adding a third party tool like Appsense or RTO. Yes we want a password management tool, but since it is not part of MPS we don't see the value when we see other products that can provide the same function at the same or lower price. For the price of MPS they need to add more value considering what is on the horizon for nataive TS

The Tricerat suite offers an strong feature set easy to use and practical management tools that cover all and even more of the here proposed "Must Have" features.
