FAQ: Using Wireless Devices with Citrix and Terminal Server

Q: Can I use a Blackberry with Citrix / Terminal Server?
A: This depends on how you want to use it. Yes, you can synchronize a Blackberry plugged into the serial port of an RDP or ICA client device with Outlook running on a Terminal Server. No, there is no ICA or RDP client for Blackberries that allow them to run Terminal Server sessions.

Q: Is Verizon's Express Network fast enough for Citrix or Terminal Server?
A: Yes. I personally use a Verizon Express Network card with RDP 5.2 connecting to Terminal Server Windows Server 2003 almost every day. The performance is great.

Q: Are there any versions of the ICA client for mobile phones?
A: Yes, some mobile phones are supported by Citrix for access to ICA applications.

Am I correct in thinking that an RDP client could not use a Blackberry to receive new emails if the client is running the Blackberry redirector on the desktop? It is my understanding that the redirector would have to run on the terminal server and the user would have to be logged on to their terminal session to receive new messages on the Blackberry handheld. Would this work? I don't like the idea of the user being logged in permanently....thanks for your help.

Is the information regarding the Blackberry still accurate? Seems that there is some mention of Java on the 7290 so I'm wondering if the 7290's can now connect to Citrix via the Java client.

The blackberry 7100s will function as a GPRS modem for any usb enabled laptop, this will give you unrestricted internet access that is more than adequate to connection your MPS Farm.

Try USB-IT available from Emergent OnLine. It supports synchronizing USB devices through ICA or RDP.

Personally I think $995 is a little steep just to be able to sync a Blackberry over ICA especially when it can be done over the air using a BES for around $3000.

FYI on USB-IT and synching over BES.  We are running the latest versioin of BES and the latest versions of the BB desktop manager and handhelds and have discovered the following (directly from RIM).
 
Wireless synchonization via BES works for all folders except personal contacts and Public folders (which is where we keep our Global Address List, and is our main showstopper!).
 
The only issue I have with USB-IT is the price ($995 per PROC), we have 1700 BB's for 2500 users on 80 Citrix servers (dual proc, no less!)(using a full published desktop running other published apps to it via PNA 9.0).
 
If anyone else has any insight on this I would greatly appreciate it!!

Exchange GAL is done via the Lookup facility.  To my knowledge wiresless Contact sync isn't an issue with BES, but both of these are better fielded over at the blackberryforums.com site.  Here's some links that discuss GAL access:
