OK, I don't have any official information on this, but I've heard enough
anecdotal stories that I'm starting to think it might be true. I've heard that
Microsoft is working on a new version of their RDP protocol that will be the
"Citrix Killer." The current version of RDP (5.2) is based on the 5.0 version
from way back in Service Pack 4 for Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server. RDP 6,
according to the rumor, will add application-level load-balancing and
publishing. Of course this goes against everything that Microsoft is doing with
regards to their .NET strategy (as I outlined in
this white paper), and Bill Gates himself has made fun of thin client
computing in the past, so I'm not sure whether this is real or not. However,
Citrix's new Hudson release of MetaFrame Presentation Server in 1Q2004 better be
a solid product, since they now have pressure from RDP 6 in addition to stiff
competition from
Windows Server 2003,
New Moon /
Tarantella, and
open-source RDP clients.
