In this Brian Madden Live podcast, I talk a bit about the overuse of the word "virtualization" and how it applies to the server-based computing world. Should we all jump on the virtualization bandwagon? Is it inevitable, or are we already there?

Excellent program. Really made me think about virtualization and where we are going.

Gus, Rich,

Nice site. Good work on the CAG virtualization.
Maybe you should enter it in the VM contest. http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/challenge/

The VMWare appliance challenge doesn't apply to using a commercial product in the appliance (unless you received distribution rights, which I'm guessing isn't going to come from Citrix any time before we all turn into dust).

Being fairly new to virtualization, I agree that the term 'virtualization' may be overused as a buzzword now-a-days.  I, being somewhat old school, tend to think that everything has its place and that selection of server should be based on what you want to do with it.  I think that virtualization has it's place and is definately the way of the future...but I don't think that it should be a catch all.

Really enjoyed the article about virtualizing a CAG and the tools available from Frameworkx.com.

Brian...keep it up.

Well done.  Maybe you are ready for a new career...

By the way, being another home-office kind of guy I listen to the shows using the windows media center running in a VMware session and a newsgator feed.  Not that Media Center is a great interface, but I am playing with it.

Minor point.  If you intall the Dot Net 2.0 required for the frameworkz tools, Web Interface for MPS 4.0 ceases to work on that server.  SteveA.

Steve,

If you happen to run Web Interface on the same server as the Presentation Server, yes you will run into this issue. However there's a fix for it.

here it is:

Create a new file "mmc.exe.config" under "C:\Windows\system32" directory, open this file with notepad and add the following lines:

<?xml version ="1.0"?>
  <configuration>
     <startup>
        <requiredRuntime version="v1.1.4322"/>
        <supportedRuntime version="v1.1.4322"/>
     </startup>
  </configuration>

Save your changes and you're good to go.
