We welcomed Oracle into our San Francisco studios today, to find out what Oracle is up to in the desktop virtualization space. We had a visit from John Renko earlier this year going over the Oracle VDI solution, and he's back with colleagues to fill us in on the rest of the solution set as well as cover some changes in storage. We took a look at Oracle's Secure Global Desktop, discussed Sun Rays and how they differed from the rest of the thin clients on the market, and dived into storage options in Oracle VDI.

Wrt the 'Can you use a smart card reader with a PC or a Mac, for example, and access your session?" (using the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client)

Yes.

We have a customer who has grown to about 1,800 Sun Rays, about 500 PCs and Macs using various USB smart cards readers, and another 200 "XX" thin clients with smart card readers (essentially acting as Sun Rays) and the users just move between the thin clients, Sun Rays, PCs and Macs instantly by inserting their smart card. This is all run out of one data center and no location is larger than 50 seats (most are 3-5 seats). A LOT of locations over a huge area, and the ALP protocol is a huge benefit here.

And for what it is worth they are not an "Oracle Shop" - they just like the simplicity they have had for years.
