One of the items that has been emphasized is a "green" theme to the conference. 

The conference is being held in the Moscone Center which has been touted as being environmentally friendly.  This is through the use of recycling and various energy conservation efforts.  The VMware conference has also emphasized utilizing refillable water canisters vs bottled water, using electronic surveys vs paper (although I am given a paper survey in every session), and Wyse has a lease on an energy efficient vehicle they are going to give away.

The lunch that was provided today was in plastic containers that are recyclable and they passed out blankets where you could sit in the Yerba Buena Garden area of the plaza and have a picnic.  It was a nice change of pace from the standard conference hall banquet eating area.

I went to a concert recently in my area (The Virgin Festival), and all of the beverage containers were made out of corn.  It was amazing, the cups looked and felt like plastic, but it was 100% biodegradeable.  The did the same thing for the plates that the food was served on from the vendors.  They also gave out prizes to people that collected the trash that people left behind and brought them to the recylcing/trash bins.  I'm not sure what the cost difference is for purchasing paper plates and plastic cups instead of corn cups and plates, but I really though the idea was ingenious, and it makes wonder why can't I buy these things in the supermarket?

Here's basically what it said: "Best efforts to eliminate trash:  Items that usually become trash at concerts are being replaced with compostable products made from renewable sources. Examples include plates made of sugarcane (called Bagasse), cups made of corn (called Bioplastic), trash bags made from corn, utensils made of wheat and potato, and straws made from plants instead of petroleum."

That's great. My head still spins when I think about how much trash was produced at TechEd. Tens of thousands of bottles alone..

Visiting the new VMware HQ today sure made the experience of the Green focus complete. VMware is building an entire campus with the emphasis on Green thinking, everything was build from recycled materials and if not they were made with the focus of being recycleable or reuseable.

Nice to see they take the thinking all the way :-)
