BriForum 2008 "Tomorrow's news today"

"Tomorrow's news today" that's BriForum 2008. Together with 20 other speakers I joined the BriForum crew this year. It's really an honor to be part of this impressive list of awesome experts and it's great to learn from these guys! This year I gave three presentations: Hyper-V unleashed, Streaming Smackdown 2008 Edition and Top10 challenges with SoftGrid (and other application virtualization solutions). These presentations can be downloaded from Virtuall, hopefully that makes sense!

Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 Deep Dive

Chris Lord, Sr. Program Manager at Microsoft presented a Sequencing Deep dive @ Tech-ed 2008. The presentation describes 'inside the virtual file system', the sequencing process, volume management, Dynamic Suit Composition, State Management and Sequencing process. Last year when I visited Microsoft in Boston Chris presented this great information to a small group, I really think this information is usefull for every App-V die-harder.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Connection broker comparison

Patrick Rouse created a great VDI Connection broker comparison. Patrick works for Quest/Provision Networks, but he serious investigated the VMware VDM and Citrix XenDesktop solution. I know that some people reviewed this matrix just to be sure that this document is as accurate as possible. This connection broker comparison matrix compares Citrix XenDesktop, VMware Virtual Desktop Manager and Provision Networks Virtual Access Suite. It's a nice starting point in investigating which connection broker fits your needs. BTW: What are you connection broker needs?!

VMware ThinApp helper configuration utility

VMware ThinApp, former know as Thinstall, offers functions that other Application Virtualization solutions cannot offer. It is no problem for Thinstalled applications to be executed within a few seconds on a workstation, where no client is installed and where there is no back end infrastructure present. Thinstall has several advantages over other application virtualization solutions. A complete overview of Thinstall can be read here: http://www.virtuall.nl/articles/PublishedArticles/LanVisionThinstallenglish.pdf One of the disadvantages of Thinstall is the GUI for configuring the files of the Thinstall application, there isn’t a GUI available. CIS group created a GUI which can be used to configure the parameter text files for each Thinstalled application. Very usefull!

User Workspace Management with RES PowerFuse

Large software suppliers are so focused on the management and maintenance of ICT systems that they tend to forget the other important half, the user side, of this management. Users would like to have a simple, uniform, fast and reliable workspace environment. Administrators would like to be able to manage this Windows workspace centrally, regardless of whether it is a physical or virtual workplace, implemented locally or centrally and whether the Windows applications are installed, streamed or virtualised. In many organisations the term ‘user workspace management’ is still relatively unknown. When the organisation understands the meaning of user workspace management and sees the opportunities and benefits this provides to the users and the IT organisation, the customer, in my experience, is often surprised that this solution has not been applied earlier. Customers who use user workspace solutions reap the benefits of this and never want to go back again!
