[UPDATE: Since we first published this information, we decided not to have a BriForum conference in Europe. So this even is canceled. Please read this blog entry for more information.]

We finally nailed down the dates for BriForum Europe 2008. It will be November 5-7, 2008 (Wed-Fri) in the same location as last year: The NEMO Science Center in Amsterdam. We'll announce full details in a few weeks when we launch the new BriForum website.

No other location available all over Europe???

Hi Brian,

to speak frankly: No, I did not like the NEMO Science Center: it was loud, it was dirty sometimes, it was a mess with all the normal museums visitors, no good location for the evening events, and it is located in the Netherlands (just kidding Jeroen and his friends).

Is there no way to find an other location in Europe? I would like to see the event take place in different countries each year, so that each year a part of the audience does not have to travel abroad.

 Just my 2 cents...

regards Josef

Different Countries

Hey all,

We actually tried to do that this year.  We looked at the UK and in Frankfurt, but were unable to find something to accomodate all of needs.  Ultimately, we had to pick a place quickly so we could begin arranging hotels, catering, sponsors, and such, so we chose NEMO again.

We learned from this process that we need to start looking for 2009's venue very soon.  We're open to suggestions--where would you like to see BriForum held?  We like to do unique venues, so if you have any in mind, please let us know.  You can contact Emily, Brian or myself with any ideas.

great, but...

Hey,

great that briforum comes to Europe again, otherwise we'd have to travel to the states  ;)

I have to agree to some extent to Josef & the guest comment, I would also like to see it happen in different countries from year to year,  or at least at 2 or 3 alternating locations/countries, ideally geographically well distributed over Europe. I can't imagine that it is really that hard to find a suiteable location if you're not restricted to an certain area.

As for Amsterdam 2008:
Josef, since you have been at Nemo last year, do you remember the closing keynote? There Brian (I think it was him?) asked  whether BriForum Europe 2008 should be held again at NEMO. The vast majority of the people were in favor of NEMO back then...

So we shouldn't blame the guys for doing what the majority of attendees wanted!

After all, I can't agree that NEMO was bad. The rooms where the sessions were held, were excellent, the lumiere is great for the big audiences. The other areas, might not have been great but still ok IMHO. Amsterdam itself is also very nice (unfortunately a bit far away from Austria ;)

I hope I'll be able to join you again this year.

Two more things to add:

(1) In the survey, the results where overwhelming (90%+) that people liked NEMO. So we chose again based on that.

(2) Moving BriForum is a new country is VERY expensive, both in terms of time and money. We hope to move it around somewhat, but it is hard and expensive for us to keep finding new venues and then find and arrange all of the hotels and food and AV and rooms and everything. So I'm not saying that it will never move. But we will probably try to keep it in the same place for awhile.
