Today, we're officially announcing the first batch of sessions that we'll have as part of our sixth BriForum in Chicago from June 16-18. (We'll have 60 sessions total. I still have to work out some more details with a few presenters, which is why we're only looking at 40 sessions so far.)

We've never had separate "tracks" per se at BriForum, since this was a narrowly-focused conference that centered on Citrix and Terminal Services. Over the years we've slowly evolved it into the more-broadly defined application and desktop delivery areas, including topics like application streaming and isolation, VDI, and to some extent, hardware virtualization. (Although really we only look at general hardware virtualization as it pertains to application and desktop delivery.)

This year's sessions cover these core areas, but I wonder whether there's any way that we can divide them into multiple tracks? Well, I don't want to use "tracks" as much as "tags." I'm thinking that we should pick some very high-level tags and then apply them to each session (along with color codes in the conference guide to keep it simple).

I'm thinking something like the following tags: (I'm using Microsoft's terminology here, along with an explanation of each.)

  • Presentation Virtualization / Server-based computing, both to multi-user (TS) and single-user (VDI) scenarios
  • Application Virtualization (App streaming and isolation, like SoftGrid, Thinstall, etc.)
  • Hardware Virtualization (VMware ESX, XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, Kidaro, as well as Ardence OS Streaming.)

I like the "tag" concept instead of the "track" concept because then we can apply more than one tag to each session where appropriate.

I think that most would agree that this tag system makes sense. My only question is whether we should lump TS-based and VDI-based solutions together into a single "Presentation Virtualization" tag, or whether we should separate them out into tags like "SBC - TS" and "SBC - VDI?"

Another question to answer is what we should call Citrix's product: XenApp or Presentation Server? The session proposals that were submitted were split about 50/50, but I think we should provide some standardization to make it easier for attendees. I'm leaning towards calling everything "Presentation Server" this year since that's really what the actual product is called today. Then we can use the "XenApp" name if we're very specifically talking about the Delaware or newer version of Presentation Server.

Please share your thoughts about all this belo1w:

Split them

I would prefer to see the SBC and VDI "tags" split out. Also, I agree with you on the PS vs XenApp naming, it should be PS unless its specific to v5.

It seems a little arbitrary to split VDI in half - lumping its management tools with PS and putting the backend in a separate bucket of its own. (You said you don't care about machine virtualization in its own right but just for desktops, so the hardware virtualization tag can be read as "VDI backend" right?)

I realize this is how Citrix's org chart works, but does it makes sense? For example, why is provisioning server considered machine virtualization instead of a desktop management tool?

Why not:

- Presentation Server (TS-based desktops and their management tools)

- App Virtualization (as described)

- Desktop Virtualization (VDI based desktops and their management tools, XenDesktop/XenServer, VMware VDM/VI, Ardence, Kidaro/Hyper-V, etc.)

I'm ALMOST 100% with you.. but what about hardware virtualization in the context of Presentation Servers? And what about PRovisioning Server for Presentation Server?

I'm the same guest who wrote the original reply in this thread. :)

I view hardware virtualization of CPS as server virtualization, not desktop virt. It's your citrix *server*... and you're virtualizing it. Ta-da. It doesn't really have anything to do with desktop virtualization. So if Briforum doesn't care about server virtualization, you shouldn't include it. ;) Or, you should include it in the Presentation Server track like you'd include any other novel technology for better management of PS *servers* (not the desktops they host).

Here's a good litmus test: can you really imagine one coherent talk that explores useful information about virtualizing PS servers and virtualizing desktops? (Although even if your answer is yes, you can just give it both tags - that's the beauty of choosing tags instead of tracks!)

Once I'm here,  the easy answer is to say the same is true for Provisioning Server, but actually I think it's different, because Provisioning server is provisioning the desktops in both cases.

If tags are cheap, I'd say, make a distinct tag for Provisioning server because it's a different technology that can overlay across either PS or VDI (just like app virt). If that doesn't appeal, maybe the app virt tag can be broadened somehow to include Ardence. ("Complementary technologies"? "Management technologies"?)

Or just tag "provisioning for PS" talks with PS, "provisioning for VDI" talks with VDI, and the occasional talk on "general provisioning for both PS and VDI" gets tagged with both PS and VDI. Actually, that makes a lot of sense to me, and takes advantage of picking tags instead of tracks!

Kidaro isn't a hypervisor, its workspace management so wouldn't that fall under VDI?  Also, if you have a session about hardware vs. OS virtualization - kernel virtualization really..., why would it just be Virtuozzo (vendor presentation?), what about Linux KVM?...I know I'm nitpicking, but its Friday....

However this years line up looks great with all the Hyper-V and Win2008 TS...I can't wait!

Yeah, good point on Kidaro.

As for VMware vs. Virtuozzo, no, that's not a vendor presentation. But I'm thinking as something that people would use for virtualizing windows desktops.. So I guess we'd have to add KVM too? (Although I need to find someone who has good perf data on that.)

I just noticed that Quermnet is a sponser this year...they're whole business is based off VDI on Linux KVM....I actually got introduced to Quermnet from last years BriForum.

Hey brian just to let you know you have a typo with one of the titles, look at "Rountable: Hardware's Role in Virtualization", should probably be "ROUNDTABLE"
