I got excited today when I saw the big image on Citrix.com about Citrix Desktop Server, thinking "Hooray! Trinity is finally out!", only to discover that it has only been "announced." At least this is a step further than Vertigo ever made it... (read the release here)

It seems that it was a big day for Citrix press release department, though, since they also put out a release (here)announcing the "Industry’s First Comprehensive End-To-End Application Delivery Infrastructure," of which Citrix Desktop Server is a part.

For those that don't know, Project Trinity--now Citrix Desktop Server--is Citrix's entrance into the VDI space. Currently set to be released in Q2 2007, Citrix intends to take traditional (can something that's not even year old be traditional?) VDI a step further by introducing the concept of DDI - Dynamic Desktop Infrastructure. Citrix calls it DDI instead of VDI because they feel that VDI implies a remote-desktop solution that is built on Windows XP or Vista instances running in VMs. While this is certainly an option, another option is to connect remote users to blade PCs, or even to Terminal Server-based desktop sessions. Therefore Citrix is focusing on the technology that connects users up to a dynamically-generated desktop in general, be it virtual, a blade, a TS session, or a physical PC. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to? Maybe? But they do make a good point. DDI is about more than VMware.
