Lawson CEO thinks SaaS is going nowhere

ZDNet's Victoria Ho interviewed Lawson's CEO Harry Debes about the Software-as-a-Service model. Debes thinks that model is going nowhere and will be completely dead in two years. On demand? The Cloud? All overblown hype.

What do you think? Is SaaS / on-demand applications / The Cloud just another name for an ASP that will fail in the same way? Or will it be different this time?

Company cultures will play a big role in how SaaS plays out.  A company I used to work for a few years ago would never even touch a model like SaaS because it was so darn protective of it's information.  It took an act of congress to get them to outsource their inbound email for spam administration.  They were (and still are) a big believer of insourcing as much as possible because it affords them total control.  The company I work for now is a big believer in this technology (for obvious reasons) and is embracing the SaaS concept (internally and also as revenue generator).

Just my 2 cents...

Martin Duursma, chair of the Citrix CTO office and vice president of advanced products, said it is "early days" for cloud computing. "We are on the steepest portion of the hype-cycle curve," he said, advising against fully handing over an enterprise to the cloud just yet.

Is this a smear campaign (both articles are even from ZDNet) against the cloud? :)

Lawson competes with Salesforce and the like - he is not a SaaS customer. I'd say his article plays to the strengths of his own software. If he says Cloud Computing is a fad then i'd say he is stupid - exactly the same epithet he used to describe SaaS customers in the ZDnet article.

Hahahahaaahahaa!!! Citrix talking about The Cloud being hype only? But VDI / XenDesktop is apparently ok, now that they have a product there?

I can see it now.. Fast forward to 2010 when Citrix releases XenCloud. "Now we can announce that The Cloud is not just hype anymore!"

Harry can close his eyes and say whatever he pleases.

The fact that most people don't even know who the heck this Harry guy. Why would we care about his so called vision. 

I would love to bet his entire fortune on how SaaS will flourish in two years.

The old company I worked for did IT Outsourcing, Corporate ISP and Application development.  Allot of small clients loved this model and it was sold on shared infrastructure.  All of a sudden businesses that could not afford the cap-ex of enterprise kit could afford it, locate in a secured data center.  Set and forget.  And in SME, cost makes all the difference and if they could pay less for better service, who would not go for it.

Just curious what makes the SaaS advocates think this model is so fundamentally different from the ASP model.  Clearly there was some adoption of that model, but it was hardly a paradigm shift.  What makes Web 2.0 SaaS so much more appealing?  The webbiness? Access from your mobile phone? Is the market just more ripe now for some reason?
