Something Better than Citrix Prog Neighbourhood ?? - July 04, 2008

I currently run an environment with HP Thin clients, Laptops and Desktops (not unsimilar to 99.95% of the population)

But, recently I needed to change my Citrix Server IP address, due to LAN redesign and needed then have a daunting task of visitng 200 users mahcines and changing thier IP one by one to the new environemnt.
Is there any better way of doing this , automatically ? Or is there another way of deploying apps to users apart form using Citrix Neighbourrhodd. I also have configured Web Server for Citrix, but it required Citrix Neighbourhood to work... any help would REALLY be appreciated.

Hi Luis,

If you have deployed a Web Interface server already (ideally it should be a dedicated WI/CSG server in your DMZ), then you can deploy the Citrix Web Client or the Program Neighborhood Agent rather than the full Program Neighborhood client. Patrick Rouse's web page references articles on both CSG/WI and on PNAgent - see www.sessioncomputing.com for more information.

Both the PNAgent and the Web Client can be administered centrally, negating the need to visit each end user PC to make changes.

Have a look also at the CPS Admin Guide for your version of Citrix for a better understanding of the options available.

If you would like assistance, I would be happy to consult. You can contact me at my website URL below.

Firstly , thanks for everyones feedback on this topic its been invaluable.

My next question was "how to deploy the client centrally to all users, via WI", but Alan has sort of pointed me to PnAgent etc. This is the area which I now need to study and then this will resolve the issue creating flexibility in deploying Citrix to all user around Australia, in a flexible manner.

I will review Alans source, but if anyone has any other place where direct info on this is available , I would appreciate it. I think this is a big area of Value in Citrix.

Thanks again :)

Luis, as Alan said, Program Neighborhood Agent is the preferred Citrix client, as it's centrally managed. The URL to the article he mentioned is here:

http://www.msterminalservices.org/articles/Configure-Citrix-Program-Neighborhood-Agent.html

Program Neighborhood really is a piece of technology Citrix should retire, if they haven't already.

Hi All,
I have taken all your advice and built a Site , a PN Agent site, on my WI.
Unistalled all Citrix Neighborhoods on my laptop and tried to connect to my new Site. Wouldnt work ???
I have made it work and the new way is great

BUT!!!!

I had to download ICAPakcge32.msi from Citrix, and run the install process manual, and only selected the PNAgent side. Gave it the Serve name and WHAM it worked.....but this doesnt solve the problem. I had to manually install it to work !! Is there anyway that I can automate this, so that if I log on , it identifes no client on machine and installs it, OR removes the need to install the PNAgent via .msi

I know there probably is , I just havnt worked it out. Again any quick hints would REALLY HELP. I know I am only inches away from success !!!!

Thanks in advance

Luis,

It's probably too little too late in this case, but had you used a DNS name instead of an IP address, you could have just updated the DNS pointer to the new IP address and you'd be done. That being said, if you want to stay on PN and not have to upgrade your clients, as long as you have management reach to the machines (i.e. you can push software and/or they run a domain logon script) you can simply overwrite their appsrv.ini file in the user's profile with a pre-configured one that has the new server IPs in it.

Hi there Shawn,
Thanks for your input. I think that you correct, all PNAgets should be pointed to a Servername and not an IP Address. That is exactly what I will do, but just a question (another one).

You mentioned "(i.e. you can push software and/or they run a domain logon script) you can simply overwrite their appsrv.ini file in the user's profile with a pre-configured one"

I will push out the new PNAgent via AD_Group Policy no issue, but when I checked my appsrv.ini on laptop (which currently runs PNAGent perfectly) there was no reference to server location. As per below

;**********************************************************************
;**
;** APPSRV.INI - Application Server Configuration File.
;**
;** This file contains user settings which define application
;** servers and other preferences.

LogFileWin16=wfcwin.log
LogFileWin32=C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client\wfcwin32.log
LogAppend=Off
LogConnect=On
LogErrors=On
LogTransmit=Off
LogReceive=Off

DosConnectTTY=On
ConnectTTY=Off
ConnectTTYDelay=1000
TcpBrowserAddress=
IpxBrowserAddress=
NetBiosBrowserAddress=

What file can I overwrite OR what do I need to add to my file above so that it says ConnectServer = CITRIX (or soemthing like that). Therefore, I can then create on appsrv.ini file and push with PNAgent Client all in one hit...

THANKS AGAIN ALL !!!

Hi Luis,

Have a look at this CTX article on repackaging the MSI installer:

http://support.citrix.com/article/ctx112961

Also, have a look at the Admin Guide for the 10.x client:

http://support.citrix.com/servlet/KbServlet/download/12470-102-17244/ica32.pdf

If all the computers you need to manage are domain members, you can repackage the MSI installer (ica32pkg.msi) to create a completely automated installer for the PNAgent (no user intervention needed). You can then deploy this using AD GP if you wish.

To change the server address for the PNAgent clients from an IP address to a FQDN, have a look at this CTX article that gives insight into the registry keys referenced by the PNAgent:

http://support.citrix.com/article/ctx112674

You can likely make use of the site redirection option on the WI instance for PNAgent to change the client settings automatically and centrally (although I haven't tried using this to change an IP to an FQDN - should work).

Shawn's comments about appsrv.ini were for the Program Neighborhood client, not for the PNAgent client...
